Security agencies in Nakuru and Meru have netted more than 400,000 bags of suspected contraband sugar in the ongoing crackdown on counterfeit goods.

In Nakuru, Police Commandant Hassan Barua said samples of the sugar have been taken to the government laboratory to know if its fit for human consumption.

How can this amount of sugar pass through the ports of entry without detection?

How does a sugar company produce and market sugar that is unfit for human consumption? What is the sugar meant for?

The sugar is contaminated in shipping and handling

But the bags are labelled at the factory as unfit for human consumption. Was it meant for animal feeds?

Also if you are manufacturing or trading in sugar, why would you add the very expensive mercury and copper to the product? That doesn't make any sense. Unless the sugarcane was grown in fields whose soils have high levels in mercury and copper.

And who imported the so called industrial sugar? Which alcohol was he going to manufacture or which soft drink company does he own?

The process of sugar importation starts with acquiring a license or the renewal of an existing one. No one is question who issued the license(s),when, what were the set out conditions and how much was to be imported. If this was not done, then we are dealing with smuggled sugar, if not, some fellows from AFA ought to have joined the NYS suspects a week ago.

Yaani all these counterfeit and contaminated sugar barons got bail for selling poison?

But we all know in Kenya you cannot import that amount of sugar without a very, very well connected politician kurukisha border! Kwani hii sukari yote ilipitia wapi??? Who is behind this poison?

BBI will solve it

To be refined. Actually, most sugar from Brazil and Mauritius is not meant for human consumption. To their economies, Co-generation and ethanol are the main activities of most sugar mills while sugar itself is a by-product. This explains why there are many sugar factories in Europe and Middle East whereas none of the countries in those regions grow any known cane.

Below is how unrefined sugar is handled hence contamination. You can see the supervisor there. He is straight from the washrooms. Ukitaka kutapika hio ni shauri yakosmile

@njunge you've made me google to see how sugar is handled in kenyan factories. Shocking. Even though our kenyan produced sugar is NOT contaminated and is fit for human consumption.

@Hardwood, Picture 2 and 3 are not of any Kenyan sugar factory. All mills in the country use holding bins from where the sugar is weighed either to be bagged or packaged.ION, i see West Kenya has issued a statement saying that they have been refining and packaging under Kabras brand. That effing mhindi should be hanged by his useless balls. WK has no capacity whatsoever to refine sugar!!! Period!!!

But can't authorities check & ascertain such allegations?

The incompetence in Kenya is wanting. Now the MOH has written to wholesalers and retailers to "test" the sugar in circulation. Are we not doomed? Which wholesaler will say mine is toxic?

Of course Adan is right and knows what he is talking about. This is a fight between two sets of cartels inside jubilee, each trying to cut-off the other's cash-flow.

I was shocked to read that over 2000 bags were impounded in the morning and by afternoon the government chemist was already releasing a report alleging contamination. That level of efficiency has never been present in government.
