The govt has been collecting billions in railway development levy charged at 1.5% on all imports and therefore the railway will be paid for even if it doesn't make even a single cent.

SGR raked in kes.1B in past one year of operations...326B remaining to break even...and that's not considering the interest accrued, plus the cost of running the line.

The rink has perspectives that we cant ignore
notice however cargo has not peaked and was on test run for barely five months

sgr-raked-in-ksh-1b-in-its-first-year-of-service- “The plans we are putting in place it to look at what we require in terms of additional capacity for coaches that should be ready in the next 12 months. Next is to bring in additional locomotives and coaches to provide additional trains service and in the next 24 months we will have taken care of this medium term plan,” said Atanas.

Why is cargo proving quite a hustle for all the stakeholders involved?” we posed to the Kenya Railways Managing Director.

“There are so many handlers involved and with that comes the challenge of adjusting, its a new revolutionary service, as you go through this process you expect such teething problems will be overcome,” answered Atanas.
Initially, cargo was to be cleared in less than six hours but this is yet to be achieved with importers waiting for more than three weeks to access their containers.

“There are KRA issues, there are KPA issue all of which we are working together as a joint team in order to resolve and its just a matter of time before customers start enjoying these services,” said Atanas.

These challenges have, however, seen most importers shy away from the freight services despite huge discounts that have been offered by the government over time

That will disrupt the wildlife. Not a good idea.
Was there today and only managed to catch a glimpse of a buffalo carcass, giraffes (deep in the park) a grey and tired Ostrich, gazelles, a ka lioness with cubs and 1 masai guy playing alone.
They must be be hiding from humans.

That 3K waiting lounge should have 65 inch tv set with nice brown leather seats...all facing towards the tv.
Plus free water dispensers, and of course some copies of nondescript old newspapers and magazines just to make the guest feel like they are very important.

There are buses for mwananchi at 100bob from sgr and mtwapa/old railways and 50bob train from railways nbo. That would make total 1050bob for one trip compared to buses at 2k. Then consider the comfort and prestige.

I nowardies prefer sgr than flight for leisure travel (read long weekend booze)

I rode the Inter-county train 2 weeks ago from Syokimau to Kibwezi @ 400/= and it was full. Cost me 30 bob from Nairobi Railway bus stage to SGR stage mombasa road and a 10 minute walk to SGR station. From Kibwezi to my destination [Machinery town] cost me 100/=]. Was far much cheaper than driving down and only took 2 Hrs....and also safer. Only downside is the SGR stations are located far out from the town e.g from Kibwezi SGR station you have to get a boda boda @50/= to Kibwezi town. And also SGR should have a late evening/night train. Most travellers would love to travel early to town served by SGR, do their business and catch the evening train back to the city.

If the buses are back to pre-SGR business it just means that the pie has grown bigger i.e there are more people traveling to Mombasa.
