Kenya is moving to rehabilitate its oldest geothermal power plant for increased generation of electricity after securing a Sh9.53 billion loan from Japan.
Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich Friday signed the financing agreement with Japanese officials for the refurbishment of Olkaria I Units 1, 2 and 3 – Africa’s first geothermal plant built in 1981 in Naivasha.
The upgrade will expand the capacity of the ageing steam-powered plant from 45 megawatts to 50.7 megawatts upon completion in November 2021.
KENGEN will repay the concessional loan at 1 per cent interest rate over a period of 30 years, inclusive of a 10-year grace period.

Good one. Powerplants useful life is 25 years but Olkaria 1 did 37.

"KenGen is set to step up power generation from hydro stations following heavy rains being experienced in several parts of the country.
The increase in rainfall has seen water levels rise, allowing optimum power generation.
Masinga dam,the largest in the Seven Forks cascade had risen to 1,045.86 meters against a maximum level of 1,056.50 meters.KenGen will step up hydro generation in months ahead and conserve available water to last until the short rains later in the year."

Effects on profitability will be felt in HY2018/2019

Kiambere dam has been spilling over hence floods in Tana River county but KenGen is issuing a spillover alert 24 Hrs later!

Why isn't Masinga dam level public data with weekly updates? I follow @WandileSihlobo a SA journalist who gives all SA dam levels on weekly basis and will compare year on year damn level for same date.

Data as provided on #SytemYaFacts
"NB:The minimum level at Masinga is set at 1037....after that you shut down the dam."

Data only provided by Oleitumbi (PSCU) after public pressure on empty dams besides heavy rainfall.

Don't you think this data should be publicly available say weekly, monthly and would help you trade a share like KenGen whose profitability depends on amount of water in dams?

Garissa County government threatening to sue kengen over massive destruction
This follows spillage from kindaruma dam that left 2,000 people displaced
Masinga dam 6m shy of spillover.

If the dams got full and broke there won't be anyone left in Garisa. Also the dams belong to TARDA. I must say though KenGen mismanaged this one - they normally give 24 - 48 Hrs notice before spillover

They gave 48hrs notice though i agree this one they mismanaged reason being fuel cost levy is high so they didn't want people to know otherwise the public would have protested why hydro power is not being maximised

About 75% of KenGen revenue comes from "Capacity Charge", not "Energy supplied". As long as they have power plants ready to supply, they get paid - whether they do supply or not!

Their success hinges on cost containment and investment in new power plants.

Good news for shareholders. GOK should sell more of their stake to institutional investors to unlock the value of the counter.

With 13% they deserve a board sit and hopefully they will get someone professional.
