What is the prospect of computer recycling in Kenya given the level of computer acceptance in Kenya? I anticipate disposal of computers as well as mobile handsets to offer a major business opportunity. Are there companies doing this at the moment?

Interesting topic. I do not know what the prospects are. I am sure this will happen at some time or it is already happening. I think the obstacles are, naturally we Africans like to hold on to stuff indefinitely. This means getting people to donate these devices will not be easy, especially when the thought is you will benefit.

The other point is I think the materials inside computers, monitors, phones etc can be redeemed for some value especially the metals. But also there are some toxic components in some of this devices e.g. CRT monitors that can be hazardous. So I think companies getting into this area have to address these issues.

@Phaoro I am looking at it in terms of garbage like any other where the person looking at disposing of the computer should actually pay so that the toxic components can be disposed of in an eco-friendly manner. While in the developed countries, recycling could include donations which end up in developing countries, in Kenya, the situation is different as close to 50% of the computers are recycled ones and are likely to have reached their end of useful life. I guess, NEMA may have to come up with legislation to regulate disposal.

It will be very hard to convice people to pay for disposal of computers and peripherals. What is the chance that once an owner/user has determined a computer's usefull life is over, they are going to call you over and pay you to dispose it? I see where you are coming from, but definately that is an uphill task.

Methinks the initiative has to come from policy.

Remember the Michuki rules? Remember how it revamped the otherwise shaky PSV vehicle leasing biz? Remember how it injected new life into insurance?

If NEMA were to tighten their noose on E-waste, a computer recycling biz will be the next best thing since independence.
When my mouse/keyboard/power supply conks out, I simply ditch them with the rest of the household waste.

Alternatively, you could try "up-cycling", i.e. create useful products using e-waste...
So nice that its nasty, so bangin' its busting,
So slick that its sick, so dope its disgusting!
