Boss, elections ended. I suspect you saw my name and the topic and you went straight into defensive mode.

My observation was simply about Uhuru's remark that a single train could replace the trucks. That was factually incorrect. I am sure we agree on this.

Now, did the president make a mistake ? I don't think so. He has some of the sharpest minds advising him. Was it a typo ? Absolutely not. I suspect it was very crafty political messaging. You know that SGR has delivered what he said it would deliver. 90% of Kenyans cannot grasp those numbers. The reactions to his tweet were adequate proof.

On the numbers, KPA is about 1.2 million TEUs annually. Our friend @mkimwa is a veteran of long distance trucking. He explained with figures why SGR cannot take over business from the trucks. In case you missed it, even with the current subsidized SGR rates, trucks are still 30% cheaper. And they deliver to the doorstep.

However, some types of cargo will move to SGR automatically. Think steel, iron, printing papers e.t.c. Mainly heavy stuff that exceed the 28T maximum load per container.

They will be moving 1M by rail annually, the trucks can move the rest.

i.am.back!!!!

Speaking to the Business Daily Wednesday, Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina said the locomotive will instead arrive on Thursday because it’s not filled to capacity.

“The second cargo train which was expected to arrive in Nairobi today from Mombasa will arrive tomorrow because it is not full,” said Mr Maina."

The above scenario had been predicted by one of our own members here called @kysse. She is an insider in logistics. I suspect she is with one of the top logistics firms. Either DHL, Bollore or Kuehne+Nagel. Madam @kysse, if you are there. Now is the time to guide the discourse on this forum with an insider view.

Why on earth would the SGR lack cargo on the second day of operations ?

You can do better than this. Even a roadside lunch kibanda/kiosk isn't filled to capacity on 2nd day of operation. Humans need some time to switch from what they are used to.....

A lot has been happening 'kwa mchina'. ( thats what they call the factory).
Not visible from the main road.I use the route as a shortcut.
Divert from the main road as you are going towards masai lodge, turn right then left, you will get there..just follow the many trucks.
I used to think it was a nuclear facility coming up because of its size, security and the daily though hidden activities because of the fence.Let me see if I can upload the images I took today.

On the last photo, behind the trucks is a raised bridge. We were unable to use that section.
I only rembered to take a photo after we had crossed so its not very clear.
Hundreds of workers were on site.

I misread your post.
Icd to jkia is a very short distance.
Our export market consists of perishables which mostly fly by air.

What would necessitate this?

several reasons.

1.KPA delays-system issues-affects truckers as well.
2.KPA bureacracy
-The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has since said it will initially allocate just 40 per cent of its yard containers, about 400,000 per year or 33,333 per month, to the SGR trains.
3.Client preference-To door is most preferred.

Will inquire more.

Thanks @essyk for the infor. I admire the Chinese audacity of "going ahead with the job", and modus operandi (working away from public eye) despite the court case.

Without ignoring the 'big boss' support they are getting, I believe this is one classical example that makes chinese contractors stand-out from the rest.

Mombasa- Nairobi cargo train made its maiden trip yesterday. It had 104 containers.

The president tweeted that the single train was carrying equivalent of what trucks carry in a day.

Thousands of reactions later, not a single person could notice the claim by the president was grossly inaccurate. Trucks ferry between 2000-3000 containers daily.

Tis amazingly easy to confuse people with numbers.

What do you mean not a single person yet you noticed?

It caught my eye right away. I have learnt to treat official figures with a pinch of salt. But I admire the political class for their audacity to regularly throw figures and get away with it. Remember sonko claiming to be collecting 4 times what Kidero was collecting ? Turned out he is actually collecting less.

If you follow the president on twitter, you will know there are two groups who can never agree on anything.

On this tweet, Uhuru supporters were ecstatic that finally the trucks are off Mombasa road. His opponents are arguing there will be job losses.

The truth is that the impact will be minimal. BTW the old railway has always ferried more than the 104 ferried by SGR yesterday.

Check this document..

http://top.ttcanc.org/do...ocid=150410290402214866

Page 34 contains the average number of trucks that pass at each weighbridge. Roughly 2500 trucks pass at Mariakani every day. Uhuru's figures are definitely wrong on this one. The traffic is way more than 104 containers per day.

I am not @kysse,but we spoke then and no one would listen.

When we raised the issues, the sycophants were on our case.
Thing is, most of us importers based in Nairobi, we indicate on the Bill of Lading that our shipments' final destination is Mombasa.
With that simple act, those shipments cannot be loaded on the SGR. Until that changes, only the big firms/orgs whose shipments may have their final destination as Nairobi will have their shipments loaded on SGR for Nairobi.

Until we(small importers but the majority) know what's in for us, not so many will change shipping instructions on their BLs, for reasons we raised when SGR passenger was launched.

Why would I pay more and have to wait for longer?

Some wonder why Mwafrika is behind in everything, it's some kind of reasoning I see here. These people opposing infrastructure expansion, go out there, visit the world we are eons behind.

Heck even if the SGR is double the cost, can you think outside the box on the pros, time saved, reduced congestion, quick flow of goods & services, roads damage, amount of cargo one round of train will transport etc etc. Nini mbaya na watu?? Lets review 1 Yr later and see. I recall people made noise on Thika Highway, these days wamenyamaza!

Heck, business is about profits and the margins are highest using road cargo for now, ceteris paribus.

At the moment, trucking on the road is cheaper & convenient.

I am wondering people who are not direct consumers of this SGR Cargo, are lecturing others.

@harrydre. As it is;
It's not saving time (congestion at ICD)& delays at Terminal 2 in Msa. Hence no such quick flow of goods.
It's expensive.

These are the ONLY major factors a consumer (exporter or importer) will consider. Once they are fixed, we won't have reason to use road. I will benefit directly. Why would I oppose such a thing?

Stuff like road congestion, amount of cargo moved per trip etc, those are for the masses.
Masses do not transport cargo, individuals and businesses do.
Fortunately, in business,it's more about business sense, unlike in our politics were other factors reign supreme.

At the moment,
Only @Essyk is seeing it as a consumer. She's going to try transporting using SGR Cargo, I am sticking to the road.

If we removed our political goggles briefly, we would all agree that they day SGR makes business sense to the importers and exporters, trucking will die a natural death. Until then........

From the over whelming response seen so far, the passenger side of SGR has made business sense for Kenyans. I have no doubt the goods side will come to make similar sense. The issues being raised are real but surely not unsolvable.

I have 2 issues here:

1. It is not true that Mariakani handles 2500 trucks daily. 2500 trucks daily translate to 2 trucks every minute. This is not practically possible in Kenya, in fact at the weighbridge, one truck always takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

2. SGR will greatly ease traffic congestion on our roads. Roads are usually destryoed by heavy cargo. We will incurr less in road repairs and maintenance.

3. It might not seem feasible to make profits right now with SGR but wait till the train reaches Busia border. I can assure you, all those ugandans, rwandans, burundians and congolese will never use lorries from mombasa to busia as they will prefer SGR due to speed and cheaper costs.
Enjoy every moment of your life, you never know when your time will come.

Do any of you think the Lunatic express made any business sense on the first month of operation? Nasarites need to relax and prepare to swear the President and Vice President of NASA or is it NRM?

@Murchr.

Acha siasa. Hii ni biashara.
You got to do better than that. Address the issues economically and wait to politick come 2022.

Do you honestly think if the issues raised are not addressed, with passage of TIME ONLY,we'll all start using a more expensive & slower alternative? HOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If so,sing some more about your political masters.

In business, we'll have our say.

Its funny the standard response to any critic of the SGR is always that we are NASA supporters. Business people are the most pragmatic of all creatures. Even an ardent supporter of Jubilee will only use SGR when it makes business sense.

Your analysis are always wrong, and its true you are Nasarites. The same way you naysayers were complaining about Thika rd.

@FRM2011.

From the over whelming response seen so far, the passenger side of SGR has made business sense for Kenyans. I have no doubt the goods side will come to make similar sense. The issues being raised are real but surely not unsolvable.

@Wakanyugi.

Nobody said they are unsolvable.

They are very solvable. That's why we want them sorted out first.
