Jezzus. The US can't even build a working railway. Amtrak train derails on FIRST day of operation killing 6 and injuring many. Sad. US should learn from kenya China/Japan on how to build and operate a railway.

Saw this on FOX news and wondered whether we are prepared for such a disaster. God forbid!

The rescue operation mobilized within a short time span was impressive.

Pole to those affected.

No need to worry. Coz such incompetence can't happen in .ke. FYI that 'Trump train' was on its first inaugural journey, maiden journey, and things went haywire meaning the problem was with the infrastructure and its design. Kenya's SGR has been tested for months and proved to be perfect. Americans should learn some of these infrastructure matters from kenya.

I think we should be questioning why we need Chinese to come all this way to oversee some of the construction works 50 plus years after independence.. And still they get it wrong leading to deaths today at Mai Mahiu http://www.businessdaily...4884-12bm3ehz/index.html

@hardwood today at Mai Mahiu deaths have occurred during the SGR construction.. May God rest their souls in peace

Don't mix issues. Workers die all the time during major infrastructure projects...dams, railways, tunnels etc etc. The issue here is that the US railway was complete and certified as safe for use. Then the worst happened on the first trip. This points to the incompetence of the US engineers.

Have some pride as a Kenyan. Walk with your head high. Don't mix construction issues with operational issues. Accidents do happen at construction sites. If only those workers had adorned safety gear, maybe they would be alive today.

Was decidedly not proud when I last travelled on the SGR. The escalator stopped functioning and a Chinese guy had to come and unstick it...I know we have skilled Kenyans who can do this work..

In construction (contracts) there is what is called defects liability period...anything that does not work as per contractor's guarantee/warranty is fixed/replaced by the contractor. Most projects, contractor does this for 6 months to a year. Thika road was a year. Wakijiharibia wasilaumu mtu, wajilaumu wenyewe.

Who keeps data on major construction projects accidents / incidents in Kenya? NCA? I did not hear of any adverse reports during the Mombasa-Syokimau SGR construction. May be they did very well on safety issues.

Most of the incidents reported in the media are mostly with small and medium residential construction projects.

Working in a tunnel in mai mahiu is more dangerous than working in the plains of makueni/manyani. That said construction sites are hazardous the world over, even in the first world...

https://www.theguardian....ers-safety-construction

Quote:
The construction industry is the most dangerous sector in Britain. There is no trade like it. To put it in context, 448 British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001. Over the same period, more than 760 construction workers have been killed on British sites.
