Meanwhile in Kitui Her Excellency Ngilu has launched a program which has distributed 400 tons of green gram seeds worth Sh108 million to more than 200,000 households in the county

“If each kilo of seeds yields a minimum of 100 kilos of produce, this will give our county a total of 40,000 metric tons of green grams,” Mrs Ngilu explains, adding that if the harvest was sold at a conservative price of Sh100 per kilo it will earn the county an estimated Sh4 billion in one season.

This will be quite transformative for her people

This is the the kind of creative policy action that will finally make our devolution experiment pay dividends. The numbers will likely not work as hoped (a harvest of 400,000 tons will likely collapse the market). But that is a bridge that can be crossed when we come to it - i.e, green grams are not perishable and India is desperate to buy. Mama Ngilu ought to be commended, and copied across the land in different ways.

In the latest spat, Hon. Purity Wangui has inaugurated Ngirici and Sons Rescue Team moulded in the image of Sonko Rescue Team.

In this regard, it seems His Excellency Mike Sonko has, indeed, set a high bar for both Governors and aspiring Governors.

Could she get a better name for her outfit?

I could be wrong and I hope @mahegoat can advise here. But I think within Kirinyaga, the "ngiciri" name sits right there at the top with the other great names from the county. James Njiru, John Ngata Kariuki, kanyotu, Philip Ndegwa e.t.c. The kind of name that can open any door for you inside Kirinyaga.

I could not have put it any better.

Can't these governors just develop county emergency services that will last past their terms? Why use these strange names and ad-hoc teams future governors would just drop.

I don't want to rain on her party, but the estimates are way ridiculous.

If she has distributed 400 tons to 200,000 households, it means each household is getting 2kgs.

An acre takes about 8kgs of seed, meaning that they will planting 1/4 acres....in Kitui, people have large farms, and 1/4 is too small for some to do it with some economies of scale.

Two: If you distribute seed to poor households with no food to eat, it will definitely end up in the boiling pot for dinner.

Third: There is no way planting 1kg of green grams will yield 100kgs. The productivity is more around 3bags per acre (From Google)...meaning 1kg is yielding approximately 22.5kgs in a best case scenario.

Assuming that of the 400 tons, 100 tons will be made dinner, the remaining 300 tons will yield 4500 tons at a weighted productivity of 15kgs for every kilo planted.

If they sell everything harvested @80Ksh ...due to the excess supply at harvest, they will make 360 million from the 108 million spent to buy seeds.

If you factor in fertilizers and labour, profit will be about 100m not the 4billion she is fronting.

Its a step to the right direction though...instead of the thuggery in the other counties.

@kenmac, Very true. What i admire of Kaluki is her sheer determination, focus and force with which she has settled on her Job. Unlike some very learned Governors, she has shown the will and is leading her people from the front. That is leadership.

Even if she manages a quarter it will be highly commendable.

In Muranga, Wa iria gave farmers 2kgs of Maize and 10kgs of fertilizer during the last planting season.Has also assisted dairy farmers with a market for their produce, is assisting them with improved fodder seedlings and is changing livelihoods at the grassroots, despite his many other shortcomings.

When people have the right leaders, things can happen.

A Kanyotu wannabe.I heard he was Kanyotu's KYM and they became very close and along the way he started getting deals and property using Kanyotu's name.Other rumours are that he is Kanyotus son for some mama whom he did not marry.

Kanyotu has no responsible sons I hear hence Ngirichi coming in.

To understand the name choice, you need to look at this from the perspective of the average individual in the villages and grassroots of Kirinyaga.

I have just conducted a personal survey in our neighbourhood. The first question was: Who is Purity Wangui Ngirici? 92% of the respondents had no idea.

Question two was: Who is Wa Ngirici? 82 percent of the respondents looked at me like I had grown horns while 10 percent responded: tîga wana Cee.

Conclusion: Ngirici is just as popular as Waiguru, if not more. As such, the name use is a direct challenge to Waiguru.

While Her Excellency Ann Waiguru is lovingly referred to as Minji Minji, Honourable Ngirici is lovingly referred to as Wa Ngirici, literally, Mrs. Ngirici.

Mr. Ngirici is a local tycoon cum buffoon who is otherwise unelectable. He is both feared and liked in equal measure.

He is associated with great things in Kirinyaga as well as some very bad things. Hon. Wangui is merely his front on the political scene.

Honourable Wangui comes from a prominent family in Mwea, lower Kirinyaga while Mr. Ngirici is from Central Kirinyaga, with some insinuating he is the bastard son of the late spy chief Kanyotu.

The two families come together to control most of the business interests, and now politics, of Kirinyaga.

Waiguru is a direct, Johnny come lately, challenge to this status quo.

This challenge will be met with force, including launching of the Rescue Team in Her Excellency's home turf, Gichugu.

We live in interesting times in Kirinyaga
