All of us are a stones throw from incurring this sort of bill, either through an accident like the Padre's friend, maybe getting a disabled child or any number of misfortunes. Insurance is capped. Harambees aside, what are people's plans for meeting such bills if (God forbid) they ever occur?

Not to fall for the hoax of doctors and medicine and accept some things in life. Accept that death is real and will come to everyone. Life cannot be bought, some illnesses cannot be healed. Have a true belief in God and accept his will no matter what that is.

Modern medicine is one of the worlds biggest con games and cancer is the biggest bait. If you have cancer it will kill you no matter what you do so do not waste time, energy and money fighting it. Seek hospice care to relieve pain and maintain a dignified life to the end.

We will all die but do not let doctors kill you. Educate yourself.

You are right. Most times the doctor kills you before the cancer does.

Spending on a disease like cancer tends to follow a particular pattern. There are high initial costs as the cancer is treated, and then, if all goes well, these costs taper off. Medical spending for a breast-cancer survivor, for instance, averaged an estimated fifty-four thousand dollars in 2003, the vast majority of it for the initial diagnostic testing, surgery, and, where necessary, radiation and chemotherapy. For a patient with a fatal version of the disease, though, the cost curve is U-shaped, rising again toward the end—to an average of sixty-three thousand dollars during the last six months of life with an incurable breast cancer. Our medical system is excellent at trying to stave off death with eight-thousand-dollar-a-month chemotherapy, three-thousand-dollar-a-day intensive care, five-thousand-dollar-an-hour surgery. But, ultimately, death comes, and no one is good at knowing when to stop.

I hear what you are saying buuuuut…There is a thin line between this acceptance and letting people who can be saved die—because they are old/disabled/poor/not the right color/tribe/gender etc.

Medicine—when not burdened by profit motives can actually be quite rational in the way it handles many issues about providing care to those with advanced illness. Most cancers for example are staged (stage 0-IV). Aggressive treatment of stage IV cancer generally comes from insistence of the patient’s loved ones and not the care providers.
