Hi all,

i was going through the late online edition of nation and a news article caught my eye...below is the copied and pasted article,:

Somali Islamists pull teeth from 'sinners'

MOGADISHU,Monday (Reuters)

Somali Islamist group al Shabaab is forcibly removing gold and silver teeth from residents in southern Somalia because it says they contravene strict religious law, locals from a coastal town said on Monday.

Residents in Marka say al Shabaab has been rounding up anyone seen with a silver or gold tooth and taking them to a masked man who then rips them out using basic tools.

'I never thought al Shabaab would see my denture as a sin. They took me to their station and removed my silver tooth,' resident Bashir told Reuters.

'In the station,I met several men and women whose dentures were being pulled out by a masked man they called a doctor. The doctor used a pincer or his gloved hand depending on the strength of the tooth,' Bashir said.

'As you smile your silver tooth accuses you. I was at a counter with my friend when three armed al Shabaab ordered me to follow them,' he added. 'I am afraid they want to make money from taking all this precious metal.'

Al Shabaab officials declined to comment.

The Islamist group says the gold and silver teeth are used for fashion and beauty, which is against strict interpretations of Islam, residents told Reuters.

Al Shabaab, which means 'Youth' in Arabic,is an al Qaeda-inspired militant group that has taken control of large swathes of south and central Somalia.

The group's hardline interpretation of Islamic law has shocked many Somalis, who are traditionally more moderate Muslims. Some residents, however, give the insurgents credit for restoring order to the regions under their control.

In June,al Shabaab officials in one of the group's Mogadishu strongholds ordered four teenagers to each have a hand and a foot cut off as punishments for robbery.

I have been a fan of islam teachings, but after reading this article aaaiiiii i will be viewing islam from a completely different perspective.

any muslim in the house,to explain this brutal actions...

...and to you SKerians don't visit somalia if you have a slight evidence of a denture,be it gold, silver or aclyric!!!!!

[The Holy Koran 3:103]You shall hold fast to the rope of GOD,all of you,and do not be divided

[The Holy Koran 3:105] Do not be like those who became divided and disputed, despite the clear proofs that were given to them. For these have incurred a terrible retribution.

[The Holy Koran 6:159] Those who divide themselves into sects do not belong with you. Their judgment rests with GOD,then He will inform them of everything they had done.

1. I think these are just idle youth who have become hooligans due to lack of hope. No government,no farming,no jobs. Compare Mungiki.

Give them something to do and all these issues will be unheard of.

Nothing justifies the killing (or mutilating) of an innocent person just because he has disobeyed the teachings of the prophet.

2. Or maybe, maybe it the Ham’s curse that affects all the cushites.

'And Noah began to be a husbandman, and he planted a vineyard.
And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
And Ham,the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brethren outside.
And Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
And he said,'Cursed be Canaan! A servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.'
And he said,'Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.'

In most Muslim nations, there is nothing like peace. All we are in the internet is the same stories we see ‘ A suicide bomb kills 12 in Pakistan' – 1 hr ago,Reuters,A suicide bomb kills 6 and injures 15 in a bus station’15 mins ago AP.

I just hope that truth dawns on them before they tear themselves apart.

3. These are end times,Read Revelation. : Brother against Brother.

I stand corrected

@kaigangio
the article heading describes it clearly 'FROM SINNERS'
pls note that every mistake has a punishment be it in religion or in a government - & for ur info, these 'sinners' have not been punished yet. removing a gold teeth is not a punishment. u can call it brutal or not but its the order of the place and u need to abide by it. if u steal & jailed for 15 yrs wount ur family say its a bad court decision why not just 5 yrs after all u hv kids & stuff!!! . punishment comes in various form in various places, the mistake u hv done can have a different punishment in another place and u still hv to abide by it.

try to learn the basics of islam because gold & stealing are the most basics which every muslim knows & HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STRICT INTERPRETATION.

@ nahdy,

if i look at it from a laymans point of view,i reckon that most of these muslims have the denture in place to help with chiewing hard foods,or any foods rather...why should the rules condemn a person rectifying a deformity or for providing an artificial article which hi/her body needs??? on another note a small percentage wear them for beauty purposes...you see,i would be comfortable indeed if this action included cutting off the fingers of the people who wear the gold or silver rings for beauty,as there is no difference with the people who wear the denture for beauty....

the idea was to remove the gold & not to punish the person as i said earlier its not a punishment. if it is seen on the finger it will be removed no doubt abt it.
to cover ur 'mwanya' u can use any other material.

@ nahdy,

i think your observation can apply very well in the case of people who wear them for beauty purposes....now my bone of contention is how about that guy who is rectifying a deformity or wearing them dentures to help him chew foods??? is it not punishing the poor 'needy' fellow????
