If these were normal times, this would pass as usual juvenile-leader rants. But these are NOT normal times.

- the military hardware gathering dust everywhere not looking good for defense contractors and need to be put into good use. Besides, someone wants his own war with a good-sized, bad-haired enemy.

- the silent jostling for global influence between Xi and Vlad after US abdicated the role last fall.

That said, sinking the Carl Vinson = WW3.

I don't think North Korea has the technology to sink a US Aircraft Carrier. They can however target some army base in S Korea or Japan, with devastating effects.

I've always wondered, are South Korea and Japan incapable of defending themselves?
It's always about US and China when it comes to North Korea.

Japan and South Korea can defend themselves very well, the problem is that of proximity, if North Korea launched a missile say into Seoul or even southern Japan, there would be very little warning and the effects would be devastating to the populations and extremely catastrophic if that missile was nuclear tipped. Both countries would certainly retaliate and probably defeat N Korea but this is a war they don't want cause they would be losing much more economically than their adversary.

Now if the missile were say an ICBM, then it would be very difficult to intercept and would probably hit any target they wanted because ICBM, generally first go into space and their re-entry positions are not easy to predict so even if you have interceptors (like THAADS, or the Israeli Iron Dome), they may be short off after a targets that are miles away from their flight paths.

Now an aircraft carrier is different. Its not a stationery target, it moves accross the ocean so first, you would need to find it and fire your weapons from a very short distance and hope it has not moved too far at the time of target acquisition. But even if you were to get the target acquisition, the missiles would still struggle to penetrate its multi-layered defence system.

With all the eyes in the sky storey versus aegis, radar technology all of which i take with a pinch, how would air malaysia have had lost their jetlinner? Nah, penetration is real. ICBM are marely a dot in radar signuture as compared to a jetliner. A homing aircraft carrier at sea would definitely be a hit on time basis owing to the fact that the later is at snails phase speed 40 to 100max knots per hour speed as compared to icbm over 17000kph speed.

Some context in this saga. Kim Jong Un is the Chairman of the Workers Party of Korea and one of the 5 members of the Politburo Standing Committee. He is the supreme leader but he has 4 other guys who form part of the highest leadership body. There is a structure here and people who talk of Kim Jong Un as if he is a lone warrior will miss the significance of his actions.

Kim Jong Un is 33 years old. The other members of the Standing Committee are ages 89, 78, 77 and 67. Kim Jong Un could very well be the grandchild of the other Politburo Committee members. The 89 year old guy, his name is Kim Yong-nam is President of the Supreme Peoples Assembly and was the Foreign affairs Minister for 15 years for both Kim Jong Un's father Kim Jong Il and his Guka Kim Il Sung. Its actually interesting that he became Foreign Affairs Minister the year Kim Jong Un was born. All the other guys were all at one time of the other in Kims father or grandfathers government.

Korea had been occupied (colonised) by the Japanese for 35 years from 1910 to 1945 and the Japanese were very brutal to the Koreans. During the Korean War it is said not a single building was left standing in North Korea by the time Americans were done bombing it. About 2 million people died.

Muarmar Gadafi was sweet talked by the Americans until he gave up development of Nuclear Weapons. They at one time made him believe that he was their friend. North Korea had also entered into a disarmament program and from 1994 to 2003 was actually complying. I even remember watching on TV demolitions of Nuclear power plants. Other countries that also gave up their programs include South Africa. In 2002 president Bush used the term Axis of evil to describe North Korea, Iran and Iraq but there was a bigger group that included Libya, Cuba and Syria that would all be treated as enemies.

The wazees of North Korea have seen all this stuff and have come to the conclusion that they do not have a friend in the world. Do not trust anybody. Build yourself up to where you can defend yourself and then you deal with the outside world as equals. Kim Jong Un is actually being very rational.
