inflated charges on shipping to kenya

Been some time since i paid that much for bringing some stuff from china.
Today i got a call from DHL and then they proceed to tell me the charges that await me for clearance.

i don't know if you guys pay for the same when bringing items.
This is too much the item cost me $70 and i will have to pay $50 and shipping cost $30 so cost is more than item price.
Any advice on how i can reduce this from people with experience.

KRA is making a killing, it started like a month or 2 ago
i imported two coats from china just before the election.. the total cost was coming up to 150 USD. Each was 49 USD then i ordered urgent delivery by DHL my total cost were 150 USD.

4 days latter i got a call from DHL and they told me i have a KimZigo at customs, i told em email me the costs. This is what they emailed me
CIF ( FOB + INSUARANCE IN KSH) 14,143.40

Duty 25% 3,536.00
VAT 16% 2,829.00
GOK fee 2% 283.00
KAA fee 250.00
RDL fee 1.5% 212.00
KEBS fee 800.00
Clearance fee 2,900.00

TOTAL PAYABLE AMOUNT KSH .10,810.00

i ended up MPESAing 10k.


Been importing things for over 3 years,i was only paying 175 ksh, i think KRA have zoomed, in they realized we are getting shyt cheaply and they are now on our balls.


I work so I can afford the amount of alcohol required to continue going to work

When importing stuff I avoid DHL like the plague. I'd rather use Posta for small items and Sahiliya for large items.

posta normal mail is very slow, took 3 days using DHL but the price waaah. i have used posta before

Incidentally anyone with contacts in the Uk need to import some spares and going the DHL route might involve more than I am willing to pay.

I tend to use Salihiya cargo when bringing in stuff from China. Minimum weight is 5kg and I find them reliable. Shipping takes about 1 week from china to KE.
