Elections are over. I have realised two things;
1. Politics is an emotional issue- no matter how many discussions you have you can never convince your 'opponents' to see things the way you see. It always ends up in a non constructive argument. Emotional bias clouds rational decision making! As such;
2. Political discussion is an effort in futility- a time filler that does not achieve any practical objective other the rationalisation of emotional decisions already made.

Background;
Politicians are selfish- you also are- and act to fulfill their selfish interests- the capture of state power to loot and enrich themselves, kin and buddies.
(on African politicians see The State of Africa and The Looting Machine.)
To do this, they subliminally condition their core support base using well choreographed and repeated messages that ensure rational decision making is thrown out the window.
Eg. Allow me to use the two dominant tribes- Kikuyu an Luo using 2007, 2013, 2017 elections based on their old to young tribal decision making process and the underdog in the election. I will also bet on 2022.
2007- Emotional trigger 2002 Kibaki tosha slogan.
The running emotion of the 2007 elections was tribalism and the consolidation of power by one community-(read Kikuyu). This message preyed on the 2002 making of a king by the Kibaki tosha slogan (the second time- after the Oginga debacle of refusing to take power before Jomo Kenyatta was released). Remember this was after the 'rebirth' of the nation during the 2002 elections (We were fired in government in 2005 3 years after the new nation in 2005 like my father in 1966 (1964-1966)).
Hence Kibaki (read Kikuyu) is the problem (41 vs 1). Thus Nyundo (I will clobber the Kikuyus) was able to appeal to this and get the support of other players as he was the most dominant with more voters- solid luo block.
Kibaki stood no chance (were it not for the ODM split) with his impressive development agenda.
The Kikuyu were comfortable with their man on top (and development that they had been deprived by Moi) and were basking in renewed optimism hence the poor voter turn-out compared to Nyanza as a percentage of eligible voters.
2013- Emotional trigger 2007 post-election violence & coalition government
The running emotion was the post-election violence and the ICC cases. This message preyed on annihilation of the Kikuyu in 2007 (the second after the colonial one of 1800s). We had been living peacefully with Ruto (read kalenjins) before Raila (read Luo) meddled and sold us to the white man (remember 1800s and colonisation) so that he can get power like his father tried in the 1960s (remember Russian debacle) and his coup in 1982 against Moi (read Kalenjins).
Thus Kamwana (one of your own who you rejected for being too young in 2002) is now taking your load for trying to help you is now old enough to be your warrior against Raila-read Luos.
Hence Raila (read Luo) is the real enemy. He wants to get to power by 'finishing' us (he even threw our neighbour out of power- Ruto-read Kalenjins firing) and we need to get him out of power like my father did to his father and there was peace in the land.
UHURUTO were joined by the poll violence with Uhuru emerging dominant due to 2002 experience and GEM vote block versus Rutos Kalenjin.
Raila stood no chance with his non noticeable (by his people) fruits of his Premier position and.
The Luo were comfortable with their man at the top, international recognition (Raila-Obama) and the ICC against the two hence their noticeable low voter turnout compared to the unexpectedly >80% in central.
2017- Emotional trigger 2013 election petition
The running emotion was the the 'stealing' of the election by the Uhuruto and corruption.
This message preyed on the bitter 2002 electoral loss for opposition that was stolen by Kibaki- read Kikuyus. They stole from us (Luos) but we got a share through the coalition government. We were close to getting the seat (presidency) but the joined with the corrupt Ruto- read Kalenjins (remember Moi?) and stole from us again aided by the unprofessional IEBC and bandia supreme court.
I Joshua as your father (baba) has seen the promised land (presidency- remember the dream of my father of getting the seat for a few minutes) as you can see from my exemplary performance during the coalition government. We can have it all, if we win this will all come to you- Luos. We will take it from the Canaanites- read Kikuyus, and give it to you- Luos (Joshua was one of the twelve spies of Israel sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan- Numbers 13:1–16. after the death of Moses- Deutronomy 34:9, he led the Israelite tribes in the conquest of Canaan- Joshua 10, and allocated the land to the tribes-Joshua 14:1).
I have yet to review how and why they lost.
My bet- assuming Ruto will be running for president and will not be the underdog- if nothing happens in between.
2022- Emotional trigger- 2017 'stolen' elections and following police brutality
The running emotion will the oppression by the government- amplified police brutality. They oppress us by 'stealing' from us and celebrate as we die.
The Kikuyu and Kalenjin government just like the previous ones are out to no good. Uhuru's- read Kikuyu government is killing us in our land (capital Kisumu) just like his father's killed us in 1969 and political assasinations (Musando-Mboya). They are killing our future by killing the young strong and brilliant. Hope it doesn't play out during the burial of Musando.
We continue to be oppressed by Ruto- read Kalenjin like they did during Moi (Raila detention, Ouko murder..etc) and corruption- if Ruto does not shed this part of his personal brand (a hate-able brand).
Do we need this government?
Luo-Nyanza will have a very high turnout in any election or referendum (if secession plays out).

TL;DR
Our tribal political leaders ensure we continue voting them in by playing on our emotions to achieve our selfish ends of survival and/or perceived economic freedom as a community and we have no idea. So far, fear has brought out the highest voter turnouts.
We vote for them to achieve their selfish interests of actualised survival and economic freedom through the state and they know that.
Poverty thinking mentality of deprivation and billionaire thinking of plentiful.
As Martin Meredith states, they are ethnic entrepreneurs.
The hot stock is the one that everyone thinks that everyone else thinks....is the hot stock (Dixit & Nalebuff, 2008).
