This means the lounges will be used only for a maximum of say 1 hour and remain deserted for the next 23 hours.

Anyone of you ever visited the Syokimau commuter train station? Its in a state of disrepair due to underutilization plus utter NEGLET! Yet it get occupied at least 3 hours a day!

The type of the train stations built by these Chinese were fully based on the China model of mass transport...those stations require several trains per day, operation every 30 mins on the minimum.

Otherwise we will see some of the rare white elephants that we thought had become extinct!





good observation there, on the passenger side of things one can easily speculate with some measure of certainty that when the novelty of the SGR quiets down we shall begin to see those white elephants roaming around and this speculation is given more credence by the fact that govt has subsidized the commercial operations of the rail to the tune of 15b all this being to the detriment of the taxpayer, if we had a double track then one would reasonably speculate that those white elephants would be kept at bay.

Yes we know what we talk about.
Double track is good for high traffic areas like high the commuter sections...it saves time,it's safer,and makes trains move more timely.
But mombasa Nairobi section traffic may not warranty double track.

Correct that and say "passenger rail service"...the freight is very profitable worldwide...however a few passenger lines are profitable like the the ones in Holland,Scandinavia and Swiss...

The ripple effect on the economy is what matters. Even the toll roads in developed economies have some investment from the exchequer to be sustainable. The toll fee only maintains the roads but are not geared towards profit making.


Ati atia ? Have you looked at the feasibility study ? Done by the same contractor ? The president has been telling us its a game changer. That it will reduce transport costs by 60%. Now I have just seen the "discounted" prices for the cargo. 50K for a 20ft container.

We have a gentleman called @Mkimwa on this forum. He is a veteran trucker. He can do a 20 ft container @50K to your doorstep upto Thika. For SGR, please add another 30K for the last mile trip to your doorstep.

Again I ask, is the game-changing aspect of the SGR in addressing capacity challenges or in competitive pricing ? On these two it falls short.


it costs around 100k to transport a container from Mbsa to Nairobi. Dont be ignorant. I have done it several times. Now it's going to be half price, roads spared, congestion eliminated, guys can do more business...Joho of all people will receive more tourists...I could go on forever.



@Harrydre. Which container size will KR be charging 50k? A 20ft or a 40ft?

Currently road charge for a 40ft high cube is between 80k & 90k.
100k is for overloaded containers, over 30tons.

How much will be trucking from ICD to the door? My bet would be between 20k~30k.

It's the Weight and not size of a container that determines its price.

20ft light can cost as little as 50k of its co-loaded (2×20ft)on a 40ft truck
Same applies if the trucker is doing a return trip..say he dropped a container at mombasa and has no other load to carry back to nbo.
20ft heavy will carry the price of a 40ft because it cannot be co-loaded.


Minimum Transport cost for a heavy 20ft and 40ft= 80k from MBA to NBO. ( sasa uhuru ameharibu hapa☺

We cannot rule out the truckers because rail will deliver to ICD and client has to make othet transport arrangements to door.Approx 15-25k within city limits.
Now the main challenge with rail freight are delays encountered during wagon allocations at the port.
If KPA fail to deliver on their part the train will not be of any help to business people.

The people who will feel the pinch are the bus companies esp those with Kungunis.

Harrydre, who will be operating the rail? The money that truck owners and bus owners used to make and invest in economy, this is the money SGR operator will make, who is the operator and how do we get this money to circulate?
