We will have to disagree on what counts as "above average" in the world of rugby. The gulf in quality between Kenya and "our peers" Namibia or Uruguay is huge.

There is a long way to go for Kenya and we need our guys playing professional rugby if we are to step up a level in the rugby world.

I agree with most of what you say. However professionalism will not resolve Kenya's problems. Poor quality players are the problem. What Kenya needs is proper youth development.

I do agree on the standard of the players. Ideally the money that comes with professionalism should be invested into infrastructure and youth development.

My take is that KRFU should study what is going on in Nambia. They almost always beat Kenya comprehensively whether at senior level or U19 level. Yet their set up is amateaur. KRFU should study what Namibia is doing in terms of player development and see how much of it they can replicate in Kenya. It will help both the XV and sevens if Kenya is developing higher calibre players.

BTW we are engaging in a good discussion about which direction Kenya rugby should go. Having a different opinion is valid. So please ignore masukuma Speak to the hand and others who think every different opinion is a fight. The lack of maturity of some people always intent on ruining threads with their pettiness makes you wonder Think

the statement "pick your fights/battles" is an expression used to force us to focus! instead of expending our few resources on everything under the sun we should do what countries/companies/people that do great things do - FOCUS! how do you make that work in a plural culture? I don't know! but if our sporting talent is getting distributed to all manner of sports and games we will only become "so-so" in some. Right now as it stands we are doing much better than our peers... if we want to move from where we are and move ahead - we have to learn to focus and pick our battles. We always need to remember that Kenya is a POOR, CORRUPT 3RD WORLD COUNTRY!

The entire Namibian Rugby team is made up of whites of Afrikaans ancestry who settled in Namibia, the entire team plays pro rugby in SA at either currie cup or Super rugby level. In short they are pro players just like their SA counterparts.

The fact that they are whites or Afrikaners should not be an automatic advantage. Virtually all the Namibian players were born in Namibia and learned their rugby at Namibian schools. That is what Kenya needs to study. KRFU needs to find out some things:
1. What are they doing at Namibian schools that is not done in Kenya?
2. What kind of facilities are available there?
3. What is the standard of coaching at Namibian schools?

Whatever is being done there is what should be replicated in Kenya.

It is indeed true that the Namibian national team (Welwitschas ) plays in the Currie cup which is very good for their program. But even without this exposure they always beat Kenya. And the Namibian U19 team almost always wins the Africa cup often easily dispatching Kenya. The last time the two teams met, Namibia U19 beat Kenya U19 39-11. So it starts at the youth level.

Also remember that when Kenya played in the Vodacom cup in South Africa in 2014, they still failed to qualify for the WC, losing to Zim.

Sione Lauaki (former All Black) also died over the weekend.

RIP, he had a short but very memorable career, always in beastmode with ball-in-hand.
