sad, I have always heard that name mentioned - but I thought Wilkinson was like the biggest star ever in rugby - ama ni shida ya kusoma british press sana.

nope Jonah Lomu was a star in his own right - he was not just a new zealand star but rather a worldwide star. Even people who didn't care about rugby got to know about him in his hey days. I don't really remember any other rugby player who broke off as he did! Wilkinson was a star but he really didn't inspire the kind of fever Lomu did when he was playing... and it seems I am not alone in looking at him this way look at this Rugby's first global superstar, a special talent who captured the imagination of fans across the world. In my opinion in order to be a global superstar you need to do things that people who don't understand the rules of the game get impressed by! Drop kicks and conversions only impress ardent fans (sorry Wilkinson), steals and turnovers as well (Sorry Richie MAKAU Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly ).

Forgive my ignorance for this game, but it looks like Lomu was a very strong guy, those guys in white (I am assuming they must be Britons) seem to have a hard time bringing him down.

Now if you got like 4 or 5 sumo wrestlers kind of guys, one holds the ball, the others protect him and they start walking towards the other end to score a try, I am sure tackling them would be next to impossible - would that like work. smile

Rugby world cup semi final 1995. One of the greatest rugby matches ever played. New Zealand 45, England 29. Jonah Lomu 4 beautiful tries. He ran through England, he was unstoppable..... a great pleasure to watch.

RIP Big Man.... Thanks for all the joy you gave us watching you!

His most iconic moment was when he ran over Will Carling who was England captain at the time.

one always got excited when he touched the ball.... you expected something special to come out of it. I remember the Sunday Nation did a piece on him in the 90s. The then 6 ft 5in 120kgs 20 year old said mentioned that he ate Some roots called Taro and aspiring rugby players like me wondered where we could get some of that! RIP big boy... RIP!

Legendary springbok scrum half Joost Van Der Westhuizen has also passed on today. One of the most memorable moments of RWC 1995 was watching braveness of Joost tackling the rampaging Lomu who outweighed him by 25 kilograms . This was after Lomu had run over England several times in the semis.

RIP Joost, one of my favorite scrumhalfs. Was a force to be reckoned with for the boks. Was easily able to slot in as a flanker.

Such a team can get slaughtered even by Kenya.

Rugby is not about brute strength, but a combination of many attributes including strength, speed, agility, endurance, technique and brains.

It's all well and good to love your country but the standard of the Kenyan game is not even close to that level.

of course... all rugby playing country's prowess in playing rubgy union can be plotted on a normal curve... Kenya is "above average"

and this is usually a puzzle... most countries at our economic state - don't punch this hard on anything
Sheer GDP - these are our peers

GDP per capita - these are our peers

We will have to disagree on what counts as "above average" in the world of rugby. The gulf in quality between Kenya and "our peers" Namibia or Uruguay is huge.

There is a long way to go for Kenya and we need our guys playing professional rugby if we are to step up a level in the rugby world.

The rankings on their own don't fully represent the differences in team strength.

Last time we played 20th placed Namibia, they spanked us 56-21 and dominated every set play. That's simply reality.

we have beaten Spain and Namibia, teams ranked right above us, we have never played Uruguay but I am sure we can take them on.

Afew more developments and competitive matches and we should very easily move into the top 20. Infact I think we will make the 2020 Japan world cup Pray Pray Pray

My point stands, take away any 5 all blacks and replace them with those fat sumo wrestlers and yeah game on, we can beat them

I agree with most of what you say. However professionalism will not resolve Kenya's problems. Poor quality players are the problem. What Kenya needs is proper youth development.

I do agree on the standard of the players. Ideally the money that comes with professionalism should be invested into infrastructure and youth development.
