If groups like Al Shabaab and the Talibahn are so sure that Somalis and Afghans want Shariah law then instead of fighting and taking power by force, they should follow the democratic route: Form an islamic party and participate in elections. If Islamic law is so popular, then they should win.

The Muslim brotherhood in Egypt tried it your way and won an election. The moment they started to introduce Sharia desired by the people, the West organized a coup, overthrew and jailed them.

Which people? Then why did the people in their millions march to the presidential palace demanding that Morsi and his islamists quit?

When is it the Egyptian people acting to shape the direction their country takes and when is it the West!
Just as absolute power corrupts leaders, so does absolute fanaticism blind the people from logic

The coup in Egypt succeeded only because the very influential army sided with the people against the Muslim Brotherhood. The army has strong influence over government policy and is funded heavily by the United States.

The defeated minority supported by the army and the West. The majority voted for the Muslim Brotherhood and wanted Sharia!

Yes they had voted for Morsi but rebelled when he tried to introduce a sharia leaning constitution, saying they never wanted to be the next Iran, and that they wanted their freedoms.

Converts in any religion are always dangerous. They usually become fanatics couple that with little knowledge of dogmas of the said religion they pretend to profess. Someone in the republic was a christian but when she converted you all can see the results.
