Embattled TV host Jeff Koinange ended his popular show JKL on KTN on Thursday night [24.11.2016] with a heartfelt apology to viewers, promising a comeback on another station “in the coming weeks”.

Koinange’s waterloo was last week’s show where Nairobi gubernatorial aspirants Miguna Miguna and Esther Passaris went overboard, with the former at some point telling the latter “Esther, you are so beautiful, everyone wants to rape you”.

The comments were slammed as distasteful and insensitive as they trivialised a grave matter.

Gender CS Sicily Kariuki led the pack in condemning Koinange, who appeared to laugh off the matter instead of calling out the fiery aspirant.

ATTACK FROM BLOGGERS

The former CNN journalist also came under attack from bloggers and Kenyans on social media.

And on Thursday, Koinange took his viewers by surprise when he hosted gospel singers Emmy Koigei and Sinach, where at the end of the show, he said he had something to add.

“About a week ago we had a programme that deteriorated into something ugly where two guests went at each other; really out of control and there are some people out there who probably thought I should have done a better job in controlling the guests and I agree looking back…but in a live television, it’s always difficult,” he said.

“But I agree, I’m man enough to man up to that. and if there is anyone who was aggrieved by that show, anyone who felt it wasn’t upto par, I didn’t do a good job, I apologize so that we can move on. It was regrettable in most parts but again, it was one show out of 300 that we’ve done here at KTN the last three years.”

DROPPED THE BOMBSHELL

Koinange then dropped the bombshell: “And having said that, this will be the final Jeff Koinange Live right here on KTN …we’ll take a break, but rest assured JKL will be back on another station in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for that, we’ll keep you posted on social media and on our networks. JKL is not going anywhere, it’s just changing homes.”

@BGL, JKL is moving for more money. KTN is a sinking ship, he's jumping ship. It's got nothing to do with bloggers attacks etc. His ratings are still very high and I know this because I'm in the media. Advertisers wait in line for a slot in JKL. He will continue to retain full Creative control.

BBI will solve it

I really like this business model in this new media age. Jeff Koinange is an independent guy like a farmer who grows sukuma wiki. KTN is just a seller like Uchumi who buys the sukuma wiki and sells to many wananchi. Last weeks delivery had a few yellow sukumas that some wananchi did not like.

KTN, instead of being on Jeffs side started shouting from the rooftops, "we do not grow any sukuma wiki, we have this farmer from Ndundori called Jeff who grows the sukuma, we are not in any way responsible for the rotten sukuma he delivered."

Jeff is a nice guy and except for last week delivery people love his sukuma. He owns up and says, "sorry guys for last week's delivery, I take responsibility and I apologize. I will still continue growing the best sukuma wiki in town but from next week please go and get it from K24. I will not deliver to KTN any more." KTN is still in the dark ages where they think sukuma ni sukuma we can always get another supplier. But what they do not know people have acquired a taste for this Jeff's sukuma that they do not like just any sukuma wanataka sukuma ya Jeff and if they do not find it in KTN they will go to wherever they can get it and also do their other shopping there.

The balance of power has shifted to independent producers with content that people love. Media companies are just retailers. Jeff will only become more and more powerful in this environment. The opportunity is there for guys who can create soap operas or documentaries or comedy shows with a loyal audience.

By law media companies have to deliver 40% (I may be wrong on this number) local content so it is not as if they can just go buy this content from anywhere to fill the space.
