It would be suicidal for the peacekeeping force to take on the army of a host country.Nobody else to blame other than the SS army.

wasn't this a rogue faction of the ss army? and what is the role of the un forces in such a situation if not to protect civilians?

They werent rogue but I guess we have to wait for the SS to investigate itself and tell us if they were.We can talk about the responsibility of the UN force but this area is controlled by SS army. They outgun and outnumber everybody else so if they decide to attack you nobody will come save you.

Who has real control of this Army, I get the feeling that president Kiir does not have total control of his forces, otherwise he would not have allowed this kind of behavior.

Loyalties in the national army are split along tribal lines and the hard line generals.

Majority of high ranking army generals (remember they became generals through thuggery during the war and not formal army command ranking) are remnants of Garang who feel nothing for Kiir!!!

Salva Kiir's biggest failing is that he lacks the ability to unite his people the way Garang could.

Both factions are led by snakes and it doesn't help that Museveni and al Bashir are involved in the background.

@Jimmy_Rodges, it is not Salva Kiir who has failed. It is those who are interested in the oil that cannot allow the peace to prevail. They are the ones who supplied the weapons in the first place... they made sure Garang the uniting factor was out of the way... Now is show time until those guys finish themselves and can't strike a big deal for the oil... then the master planner comes in for kill, the grand bargain... In the meantime dance to the tune

Ooh please stop with your phantom wars and for once just be objective, the South Sudanese are grown men (and women). They are the one's shitting on their beds and there is no point in blaming an outside force just because they have oil.

FYI, the US has never bought Sudanese oil ever, its the chinese who developed it pre-separation and continue to exploit it post separation.

@obi, just around the time you registered in SK, these news were happening...

WikiLeaks
WikiLeaks: U.S. Enables Illegal Weapon Transfer To Southern Sudan

In September 2008 Somali pirates captured the M/V Faina, a ship with 33 tanks plus various arms and ammunition on board and on its way to Mobasa, Kenia. While the Kenian government claimed that those weapons were for its own army, it was quite clear that these were for South Sudan. MoA reader B real followed the story starting with this comment. As I pointed in correcting an LA Times article, such weapon transfer to southern Sudan was illegal.

BBC News
A ship packed with battle tanks and ammunition, freed after being held by Somali pirates since September, has reached the Kenyan port of Mombasa.
Its arrival has become a huge public spectacle, with the media invited to witness the event.
This is in sharp contrast to the secrecy that has surrounded the ship and its cargo since it was hijacked off the coast of Somalia on 25 September 2008.

It is an entirely messy affair and the latest reports are that North Korea is set to ship arms in support of the conflict. As head of state Salva Kiir should have chosen nation building and protecting Garang's legacy ahead of profit.

Thanks for the tune!! Dancing Dancing

Kiir doesn't have full control of the army but he is still C in C and it was his soldiers killing and raping in an area he controls so the buck stops with him. Also the alledged involvement of the presidential guards may have made the un forces develop cold feet.
