Tanzania have said they will build SGR. Kenya is 80% done with phase 1. i.e., as of today June 8 2016 Tanzania/Rwanda wanasema watajenga (no body knows when they will start building), ilhali serikali ya Kenya tayari wamekamilisha asilimia themanini ya phase1 (Mombasa- Nairobi). Point no. 2Trucks on Mombasa-Malaba highway will still be in business since SGR cannot handle all the business in Mombasa.Hata lunatic express will still be in business once SGR is up and running. point no. 3Both Dar and Mombasa ports desperately need an an efficient outlet of cargo. Both need SGR.There is nothing wrong with Tanzania building theirs. Indeed once they build theirs, it will complement Kenya's SGR with possible linkages to Tanga and Arusha. In the same breadth, do wazuans know that most cargo for Arusha and Moshi passes via Mombasa? Do Wazuans know that there is a proposal to build a dry port in Voi to serve Arusha and North Tanzania? Can wazuans recall Mheshimiwa Pombe and Mheshimiwa Uhuru opening Taveta one-stop border post and H.E. Pombe's committment to build dual carriage from Arusha to Taveta? In short, SGR is a game changer. The biggest investment ever made in EAC...ever. The biggest infrastructural development done in Sub-saharan Africa minus South Africa ever. Wazungus are worried and very jealous. China has taken over in their once beloved Kenya. China has taken over Ethiopia. Ethiopia is buiding the largest hydro-power dam in the World...The whole world. A wise wazuan should not get worried about TZ and Rwanda's or Ethiopia's progress. A wise wazuan should know that Kenya is not left behind in this progress. Tanzania and (you guessed right) China want to build the biggest port on the East Coast of Africa. Bigger than Durban....so expect more propaganda and nay talk from the likes of BBC, CNN, CORD, Newyork times etc really, 6,000 MW I agree with your points 1,2& 3. But your statement on the west being jealous is wrong, the mzungu is generally very critical, try living or working with them and you will appreciate that they criticize everything. That criticism pushes their production to attain excellence. We should embrace it and learn from the mistakes they are pointing out to us. What is important is to look at issues without emotions. Lots of international media interest in showing Kenya is losing the infrastructure battle, hata ingunza na bbc. Considering that the other projects we have supposedly lost to have not even started.

Considering that the other projects we have supposedly lost to have not even started. From the Magufuli thread quoting The Economist: "Take, for example, his efforts to extract more tax from people using the port at Dar es Salaam, a gateway for the region. He has enforced VAT on the costs of moving goods that arrive at the port overland to neighbouring countries such as Zambia and Malawi. Shipping firms have immediately switched routes and now unload in Kenya, Mozambique or South Africa, leaving a once bustling harbour almost empty." Who is fooling who?

Did I tell you so? the Star wrote:Kenya stands to benefit from plans by Tanzania's parliament to terminate a bilateral Single Customs Territor deal with DR Congo.
The Tanzania Parliamentary Standing Committee on infrastructure development advised the government to revisit the introduction of SCT on goods transported to DR Congo.
According to the committee, the SCT which started last year has reduced cargo through the Dar es Salaam port.
Under the arrangement the two countries adopted a destination model of clearance of goods where assessment and revenue collection is done at the first point of entry.
The system has caused importers to abandon the Dar es Salaam port and opt for ports of neighbouring countries, Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) committee deputy chairman Selemani Kakoso told the parliamentary committee last Monday.
Tazara targeted to transport 200,000 tonnes of cargo in 2015/16 but managed only 128,105 tonnes, it said.
KPA principal communication officer Hajj Masemo said Kenya is way ahead of the port of Dar es Salaam on effectiveness which has attracted regional players.
“We are doing a lot of efficiency compared to Tanzania,” Hajj told the Star.
The port of Mombasa is also riding on low transport costs along the Northern Corridor.
The East Africa Logistics Survey 2015 shows the average cost of transporting a 40-foot container from Mombasa to Nairobi dropped to$1,000 (Sh101,361) last year from an average $ 1,300 (Sh131,769) in 2014, making it the most efficient route in the East and Central Africa.
Transport cost from Mombasa to Kampala came down to $2,500(Sh253,403) from $3,400(Sh344,629) over the same period.
Data by the Shippers Council of East Africa shows the cost of transport from Dar es Salaam to Kampala have increased from $2,507(Sh254,113) in 2011 to $4,500(Sh456,126) in 2015.
In 2015, DR Congo was third biggest destination for transit cargo through the Port of Mombasa with a six per cent share.
This translates to 462,000 tonnes of the total 7.7 million tonnes imported to the hinterland through the Port of Mombasa.
