Imagine free calls to any network and data at 50 cents an MB here in Kenya. What if Airtel reacts?

In 45 Minutes of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance AGM, IDEA lost Rs.2450 crore and Bharti Airtel lost Rs.9800 crore of Market cap. Reliance through the 'Jio' network has launched a new mobile tariff for free voice calls accross India, with the cheapest and simplest data plans in the world! Fiber optic network through almost 95% of India, learning institution connected, over one million free wi-fi hotspots etc. This is transform communication in India!

Yu tried this locally many years ago and failed spectacularly.

For a new business attempting to undercut the competition in this manner, the challenge is always in scaling up operations.

You wouldnt move for free calls and dirt cheap data?

It's all about network effects. Once you have caught people in a service that only gets more and more useful to them when it grows larger - you are set!!! Currency is such a thing - once it crosses the critical mass. data is not. My switching from one provider to another does not affect how I transact with others. MPESA will not be broken (maybe by law) since it's a currency of sorts and it's rolling on. The thing about network effects is that they can result in a winner takes all scenario. That is what safcom has. Data.... not so much. Voice was when calling tarrifs were high.
