I need to start a self hosted blog... I understand that this you have to pay as you have freedom to do quite a number of things with no limitations. Anybody with any idea on who are the best hosts/ providers.

Siteground,Ipage , Bluehost and many more . You can Google top 10 web host companies and see what you get.The basic package for most providers will cost 5-8K/year with the current exchange rate. You'll get about 5 custom emails and your blog should have 10k or less hits per month.If you have heavy traffic and you've subscribed to a basic package,some providers will slap you with an extra bill.

Try Amazon Web Services, they give you one year free on signup and you retain full control over your system.
Good alternatives are Digital Ocean and Linode with fair rates, guaranteed uptime and quality customer support.

I would advise you to have somebody competent do the setup for you because such services are big targets for Chinese and Eastern European hackers.

get a cheap webhost from overseas.they cost less $5.00 per month.Get a domain name if you want .com,.eu,they cost around 10$ per year.You can buy the domain from your chosen webhost if you want.Then here's the fun part.change your website dns to use cloudflare dns.This can be done with webhosting control panel and also at cloudflare control panel.The free plan is a good place to start.Now you can post sensitive,politically charge posts and nobody will ever bother you.Because of the cloudflare dns.Literally you are invinsible.Its fun and you never worry about goverment bothering.I wonder why kenyan bloggers have never taken this route

have you looked at the squarespaces site and videos? so simple to get started and lets you focus on the thing you really want to do - write a blog! not security.. not mysql instances and backups... not CSS e.t.c. just focus on what will get people there - your content. the rest are good problems to have!

a good problem to have is one that makes you have to move your site BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE VISITING AND YOU CANNOT SCALE THE CURRENT ARCHITECTURE AS PROVIDED BY PLATFORMS SUCH AS SQUARESPACES

The reason this post has meandered into different tangents is because the thread originator has not said what he wants.

1. Does he want to self host?
2. Does he want to hide himself because he'll be making Moses Kuria type statements?
3. Does he want to hide himself from the law?

Those are 3 different things with different solutions. Some of which can never be shared on a public forum like wazua where the "guests" learn about "cyber crime".

None of the above. Just want a blog where adverts will be thrown kiholela holela. But the responses here have helped me much so far.
