God knows what new lows our soccer standards have sunk to.

The new FKF president appointed the Coach of Kariobangi Sharks (one Stanley Okumbi) to coach Harambee Stars, na results ndizo hizo.

Is this even legal? How is this guy with absolutely no coaching track record allowed to coach our national team, he can't even attract the services of Muhoroni Youth yet suddenly he is appointed to make mistakes for our national soccer team.

Okumbi and Mwendwa conspiring to field two Kariobangi Sharks players against Guinea Bissau will go down as one of the worst scandals in Kenya sports. And this is a country that already has numerous scandals.

The only good things is that unlike in the Nyamweya days, Harambee stars actually plays friendlies before qualifiers.

You don´t play a friendly game on a tuesday and on the weekend you have a serious game. It is Common sense but Kenyans seem to lack common sense on all facets

Okumbi is a product of KVNB, one of the finest schools of football. He also coached Mathare United at one time. He is not that bad. He only lacks experience at National level

Why not?
A number of African teams scheduled friendlies this week: Cameroon, Naija, Uganda, Zim, Egypt etc
Its the only time the players are available before the match.

As for Kenya, the weekend match is meaningless. They are already out. They just need to play more friendlies to build cohesion for the future.

Going forward, I would hope that every break in the European or Kenyan league is utilized for friendlies. Aside from building cohesion, it helps gauge coaches and gauge players.

From this week we learned that Jesse Were is not a good option n attack but Eric Marcelo Ouma has a future in this team

Only an African team could take such a gamble. If you play on a tuesday, you have only three to four days of recovery. Bearing in mind ,that African teams don´t do and actually can´t afford proper recovery programme, that period is too short to recover and play at your maximum level after four days. For many years, the African cup was played in the same year like the world cup. It is very difficult to reach your peak twice a year. Thhis is one of the reasons AFrican teams misperform on the world stage

I have no idea what KVNB is but I sure do know this chap does not have the CV to coach any national team.
Lets not accept and move on. Excellence must be the only consideration when striving for success at the top level. Lets experiment with our youth team.

All games I have watched Jesse Were play for the national team leave me even more convinced he is a poor striker, dude just prances around. Somehow, he still features in the national team. Afadhali even an aging Oliech or a young upcoming striker.

Being a product of KNVB does not make someone a good coach anymore than attending Alliance High school makes someone a good student.

In coaching, theory is far less important than practice. Among other things, a good coach is also a good psychologist who can motivate the heck out of his players the way Marshall Mulwa did.

A good coach has an innate ability to identify weaknesses in the other team and make adjustments or make the right substitutions.

But most importantly, a national team coach should have a track record. We would have been better off with the likes of Twahir, Zico, Pamzo or even Kimanzi who have won the league and other trophies.

Okumbi was hired because he is Nick Mwendwa's puppet not because he has a record to speak of. he can't even get Kariobangi Sharks promoted from division 2. As FullyKenyan said, craziness only happens in Africa

This reminds me of the hiring of Abdul Majid by Peter Kenneth in 1998. That was a blunder of epic proportions.

The recomended recovery time in football is 3 days.

3 days is also the typical recovery time allotted in tournaments like world cup and so forth.

Since the match is being played on Sunday I think the recovery time is sufficient

Hahaha, you have just reminded me of abdul Maajid. I once drove with him in the same car immediately after his sacking and the dude was bitter like nothing. I have known Okumbi since childhood. He was always a laid back guy, whose passion afterwards, was to coach ladies play soccer. I still want to give him a benefit of doubt. Actually, apart from Mulwa, In kenya we have only had Ghost Mulei and Elly Odero as the only talented coaches
