As we drag our feet in just about everything. As we politic endlessly over nothing, even new governments such as GOSS,Burundi and Rwanda can not stand our ujinga......It's very sad how we are letting opportunities pass by.

Rwanda & Uganda are looking for alternates to Mombasa. We are lucky that Dar-Es-Salaam is even worse than Mombasa thanks to the lazier Tanzanians!

Socialism has blunted Tanzanian's work ethic but if they catch up... Kenya will be in trouble...

TZ will never catch up with Kenya, ever. That is beacuse we are running a race while they are watching it.

What amazes me is why do all neighbouring countries suddenly get xenophobic towards Kenyans?

@kulahepi I thought so too until I realised even Kenyans are xenophobic to Somalis (esp.the well-to-do), just as S.Africans were to Mozambicans & Zimbabweans and black americans are to blacks from Africa, in europe those who felt jews were a threat, etc
...sigh...guess its human nature when one feels afraid/ threatened in one way or the other

@intelligentsia very true very true. We are also xenophobic/racist to south africans.

@Kularaha TZ doesn't need to race they will watch but the will also let there stupid SADC (read south africa) friend to come in and run their race. We should intergrate EAC quickly the political wrangles should not stop the technocrats from working and more so from working with the private sector.

@Njunge this sudanese are being very myopic. If the plan is to connect south sudan to the sea then why build the rail to uganda?? Kwani Uganda has a secret underground ocean pass that will bypass kenya or do they plan on going through the DRC to reach the atlantic??

I think we should dispel this idea of lamu port. Mombasa still has so much room for growth. First they should increase the number of cranes offloading ships we only have 2-3 and the usually have break down. This has made shipping lines coming to East Africa to use smaller ships and use ships that have their own cranes which limit the number and size of ships plying the ea root.In fact just increasing the number of gantry cranes will make importing so much easier because ships will reduce the price of transport to mombasa.

Creating a dry port should be top on the agenda. Dibouti has already started on this by giving it port to dubai world. They will create a dry port for goods destined to east africa and middle east. What happens in that case is huge container ships drop of cargo from china and europe in djibouti than smaller cargo ships ferry the cargo from djibouti and other SLOWER and SMALLER port and mombasa can easily do this. IT has a deep natural harbour that can be made deeper easily, mombasa has a lot of space which is not being utilized well. Mainland kenya will provide food and water cheaply for this ships making it a preferable port to dock.

We should also dredge the port increasing the depth to allow big ships and there is so much room for expansion. They can expand all the way to port Reitz. build a Dry port to increase cargo hold for our neighbouring countries.

Lamu is not needed for a fraction of the money need to develop lamu mombasa can be built up to amazing levels and the rest can be used to build the railway. I also do not agree with the argument that the railway and port will help to develop northern Kenya.
