Just a note . Make some analysis on the effect of Trucking business by SGR.

I.e. Competition in other regions by those who will loose the Mombasa, Nairobi, Malaba etc ( where will this line end).

SGR will offer minimal impact to trucks due to the high rates of freight charges as the inflated cost of the railway has to be factored in and people got to eat in government.Trucks are here to stay!!!!!!!!!!

True that @mawinder. In the feasibility study done by the chinese themselves, a 40ft container from mombasa to nairobi must be charged minimum $1,200. Truckers will move it for you @80K and if you are paying cash it can go as low as 65K.

Trucks will be here for a long long time. Cost of corruption.

Although truck may charge cheaper two other factors to consider

1. The time the track takes compared to SGR cargo

2. The fact that the Government may burn track Msa to Nairobi
--Kampala etc in order to ensure the roads are not damaged as
the case is now.

Just being prudent.

Trucks will still be cheaper and faster than SGR, in my opinion. I see the movement of Clearing and forwarding agents from MSA to NRB.

Next year will definitely be interesting. 1 year to make some good money.

SGR is now operational on the cargo section. Time to see the impact on long distance.

The government is bent towards making this SGR cargo work:
- Transport to/from ICD will be zero rated.. Last I checked, truckers were asking for 15-20K from ICD to do door to door within Nairobi.
- There is talk of KPA forcing people to use SGR to hit the 40% allocation to the SGR.
- The new subsidized rates are competitive going by media reports. I wish they would post their tariffs online so that we can make informed comparisons, rather than rely on media reports of 50K. For example, how much will they charge for a 40ft container? Is it an introductory rate that will be revised upwards later?

So far, there is no noticeable effect but its too early to tell. We review in another 3-6 months.

-No effect at all

If anyone has any of these type of trucks and you are looking for work, let me know.

This is one of the best threads by far.

Very insightful. Am Just beginning in a small way. As a rule of thumb, always consult the wisdom of this forum first, the lessons have always been better than what a degree can offer.
