Political musical chairs!!! They know this will not go through but they will have a new song to sing. We tried but they shot it down!!!

Let them come up with intelligent ideas based on sound economic grounding if they want to help. Hii porojo ingine wapeleke kwa mazishi!!!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

This has to be the most recycled bill.I've lost count of the number of times it has been introduced.

It made Joe Donde famous which in turn made him vie for top seat thinking that fame = votes.

Someone now wants people to be talking about the Midiwo bill.

They should be coming up with bills to control government expenditure and borrowing because that is how we got here!!! Unfortunately that might also not go through because the Jubilee MPs are operating like KANU day MPs!!! They do what they are told without bothering to analyse the effects!!

Another thing these fellows can do is strengthen institutions that fight corruption. Give the anti corruption powers to arrest, prosecute etc. Have special anti corruption courts manned by seriously vetted judges and for good measure thrown in a couple of foreign judges. But when Mutahi Ngunyi talks about a fellowship of thugs, he knows what he is saying! One more thing, why wouldn't Uhuru bring in Githongo if he is serious about fighting corruption? Lumumba can also assist in the fight!

What are the incentives that cause people to engage in corrupt behavior?

That's what we should be tackling.

Greed and lack of repercussions!!!

Even your house girl can embezzle the money she is given to buy groceries etc. and probably sell some of your stuff but she knows she will never get away with it so she refrains.

Just like we do with common thieves and muggers, when you catch a guy, put him in prison and discuss the "incentives" later. Why do we afford the "bigger" thieves luxuries we don't afford the small ones!

Agree.

Greed is a constant of human nature. That's why, as in your example, when we pay maids a pittance, they'll steal. Yet Bill Gate's maid will not, even though the difference between her salary to his is rather astronomical, the maid earns enough to live comfortably, lowering her incentive to steal from him.

Quote:
When the inequalities in rewards between doing good and doing bad are small, most people will choose the good.  In a world of equal wages, there would be no incentive for evil.  The more inequality there is, the larger the incentives for greedy behavior become.

We must focus on closing the inequalities by industrializing, otherwise we're just wasting time. How long have we been "fighting corruption" yet it's always getting worse?

Wrong target.

@Ash Ock - In Kenya, we pay the corrupt buggers more than enough to live comfortably but that does not lower their incentive to steal.

Mega corruption in Kenya is not perpetrated by the poor. Far from it!!! It is not about paying people enough for them to survive. It is dealing with the corrupt ones ruthlessly.

Tomorrow open a newspaper and read any random story on mega corruption and see how many poor people are involved!!!

Our politicians come from where? From us. They are a product of our society. They learned, under our society and struggling economy with very limited opportunities, that riches can only come from stealing (rent seeking).

Quote:
Rent-seeking never encourages productivity. The production of valuable goods and services is maximized with strong property rights when little is wasted in efforts to seize the surplus of others or to prevent others from seizing our surplus.

During a strong economy there are fewer incentives for rent-seeking because production is highly rewarded. But when economic times make it more difficult to produce, it becomes more attractive to rent-seek someone else’s surplus.

This situation can create a downward spiral because the rewards of rent-seeking are often constant, whereas the surpluses available in a market economy are more variable. When the economy is poor, the burden of fixed rent-seeking costs on producers drives surpluses even lower. This makes rent-seeking relatively more attractive, which in turn further burdens those who try to remain productive.

Hallo wazuans.

The new bill by mp jude njomo to cap lending rates seems to have a broad base support in the house.

Was going to ignore it until I heard adan duale saying if the president refuses to assent, they can marshall 2/3 majority votes to compel the president to sign.

Now now, as a borrower am salivating. Apart from the banksters defence, can someone put a strong case against interest rates control in kenya.

if the bill goes through banks may now diversify into other businesses through their holding companies.

No much comment here.

1 as an investor my dividends would be low because there won't be much interest income hence anti-bill.

2 as a borrower I would love to have loan for Less interest hence pro-bill.

Since I'm caught in between the two points I choose to reserve my comments hereb

What became of the much talked about Donde bill.
I understand certain aspects, especially the one that touches on caping of interest rates was repealled.
What is not clear is fate of the requirement that borrowers shouldnt pay interests that cumulatively total more than the initial borrowed amount - ie if one borrowed 400k, in the end total amount paid to the bank (principal + interest) should not exceed 800k.
Just as absolute power corrupts leaders, so does absolute fanaticism blind the people from logic
