This is the best thing that has happened to the tourism industry this year! For once,i feel money has been poured in the right place!

Most people are very misinformed by thinking that everybody in the world knows about Kenya. fact is: For what Kenya has to offer in terms of its diversity when it comes to tourism,we have a looong way to go. The CNN ad is just but baby steps, but a move in the right direction nevertheless. We still have guys who ask...Is Kenya a city in South Africa??

By the way, amidst the credit crunch et al,Tourists are still flocking in and the Peak Season isnt as affected as it had been previously predicted. Most hotels were already fully booked as of last month, and getting rooms for the July-October period especially in Mara is as hectic as has been throught the years!

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't..

@Djinn while i would like to agree with you in general on the first part,i totally disagree you on the second part. Kenya is actually one of the most expensive tourist destination in the world, why do i say so? I say so when i take into consideration the level of development of the country Visa vi' the economic income of its citizens.

How many Kenyans can afford to visit the so called tourist hotels in the Country? In South Africa one can actually stay in a five star facility for just under one hundred dollars,i really doubt if that is the case in Kenya bearing in mind that SA has a much more superior infrastructure, high grading for its facilities and its citizen are more empowered economically than their Kenya brothers.

The same applies to Egypt, better facilities at lower costs,so is Thailand,China,Uruguy and the Caribean countries like Bahamas.

Our hoteliers need to change their business mentality and style up.Why? because when ever there is a boom on tourists arrivals all they think about is raising the costs,no improvement on facilities and come the slamp,oh government should reduce VISA fees. What difference does twenty dollars make on someone coming from the USA for two weeks when you charge 15k per nite for accomodation and/ or more.?

My observations-Under the United Nations Charter all countries are seen as equal, therefore, charging visa is a policy matter under the Vienna convention of receiprocity. How then i wonder, that one day an idiot wakes up and says oh we( Government of Kenya) are reducing Visa for those wishing to entering Kenya when Kenyans are paying a fortune to obtain Visas to enter those countries. This is simplly an admission that even though, the United Nations deems us equal,we are actually saying aloud that we are less of a state than other nations under the United Nations. This makes me want cry all the time an idiot reduces my country to that level.

Tell them Wote

These people just dont know how expensive Kenya is vs other tourist destinations not to mention the risks involved. Americans have quality destinations for fractions of the cost of visiting Kenya. And most Americans are not like those Europeans who get a month of vacation time. In America, most people get a max of 2 weeks vacation per year, and so they rather go somewhere domestic(California,Florida etc) or the Carribean.

Do you know that crapy Kenyan hotels cost more than quality hotels in the US and the Carribean? Halafu for a long time they had ridiculously high visa fee while most tourist destinations waive visa fees for Americans.

I'm not hating on Kenya, all I'm saying is that this money could be well spent elsewhere where the ROI will be much higher. And spending money on CNN(which,by the way very few Americans watch) is just pouring money down the drain.

When in doubt,follow the money.

Latest statistics show that the leading source market for Kenya's tourism is UK first and USA second.
While it takes about US $ 200 for a night stay for 2 at the Hilton with breakfast, same arrangement elsewhere, especially in the west comes at a premium.
To hire a chauffeur driven vehicle with a capacity of 6paying passengers (they share cost) for a full day in Kenya will set you back some Ksh 10,000/= equivalent to about US $ 135.
Entry charges to most tourist atrtactions sites average about US $ 40 per head.

This doesnt compare so unfavourably to what you would get even in the US itself.
In other words services in Kenya come at a discount, vis a vis what one would pay in the US for similar services.
Air fare apart,an American should find Kenya a very pocket friendly destination.

Flights to Kenya for the busy season (Mid July to Oct) are almost fully booked and the prices are much higher than they were last year. So obviously, tourism has picked up big time.

Kenya is one of the most expensive destinations in the world. Unfortunately, the bulk of the cost relates to airfare which does not benefit us and other stupid things like unnecessary jabs against all ailments known to man which to me are like non tarrif trade barriers.

The kind of tourist who visits kenya is not the same as the one who visits say,Las Vegas hence the issue of cost is not comparable. If I were to use an analogy; for an American, holidaying in the US is like buying a used car while holidaying in kenya is like a buying showroom car, both are cars but the target customer is different.

The advert will certainly place Kenya on the minds of some tourists,a few others will even make inquiries about Kenya and thats the point of an advert.

Good work KTB.

I've noticed the youth in particular coming in to a workplace with a completely outsized notion of their own value and importance... just a thinly-veiled arrogance. May be the credit crunch induced recession is whats needed to remind us all about the value of hard work.... By Anonymous
