The planned change of the name of the New Nyali Road to Fidel Odinga Street in honour of Cord leader Raila Odinga’s son has been met with criticism.

The road is to be renamed Wednesday in memory of Fidel Odinga, who died on January 4 last year.

The Cord leader is expected at the ceremony to be held in Mombasa.

However, Jubilee Alliance Party Mombasa County Chairman Ali Mwatsahu said renaming the road would be a betrayal to the history and respect of the Coast people since there were many prominent people who qualify to be immortalised in street names.

“Why not name the road Mekatilili wa Menza, after the Giriama freedom fighter? Why not name it after one of our many heroes who symbolise our identity and history as Coast community?” he asked.

“We shall not allow it. Some of those at the county government, in fact, are foreigners, having come in sailor ships and do not understand the history of Mombasa or the Coast,” he said without elaborating.
At least he should be honoured as the only Kenyan who discovered Eritrea before any of you Plugs did itApplause Applause

Fidel Odinga's age mates sang dirges and cast evil spirits away from his family by wielding spears in a Tero Buru ceremony in his memory on Friday.

Fidel, Cord leader Raila Odinga's son, died on January 4, 2015 after complaining of difficulty in breathing.

Bondo villagers waved twigs and placards and marched from Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, around his home and then to his grave where they chanted slogans indicating he was a hero.

They later slaughtered a goat and drank traditional brew busaa in a ceremony that Fidel's grandmother Betty Oginga said signified his peers deemed him a hero.

“We are taking the brew to celebrate with Fidel, as a sign of unity, a year since his departure,” said team leader Otieno Ojuok.

Betty, who received the ritual performers, said they decided to hold a ceremony before the official celebration on Saturday, when Jaramogi Oginga Odinga will also be honoured.

“They sprinkled changaa and busaa before slaughtering a goat to share with Fidel, who is perceived to be thirsty, a year since his burial,” she said.

This is ridiculous. Of all the deserving people, they decide to name a road after this dude? Truth be told, Fidel was a loser. I knew him from his days in the States (D.C). He was thrown in jail there for smoking weed and some other petty crimes. Dude was deported back to Kenya where he took his partying ways to an even higher level drinking and getting high on coke every day in Kilimani and Kileleshwa. After smoking, he and his buddies (Gichuru's son) would drive around dangerously in their big SUV's actually killing a cyclist on one occassion.

The guy the dies of a coke overdose and is rewarded with a street named after him? I knew the guy personally and one thing i can say about him is he was a really good guy, good heart and one of the least tribal guy i have ever met. Was also very generous almost to a fault but let's just say it like it is. I am not a hater but some things are just absurd. This guy doesn't deserve a whole street named after him when there are so many other people who are more deserving. Name a street after that guy in Mandera who was shot (and just recently died) while shielding Christians from Al Shabab terrorists. That's the kind of hero that deserves recognition, not party boy Fidel.

It's difficult for me to see how sainthood can be among the criteria considered when naming a street. If there can be a name for a street/road, then it need only be politically useful. Fidel Odinga's name is useful in this context and if those responsible saw it fit to use it, then so be it!
