Jerking in 2008 Legacy B4 Help!

2008 2.0 AWD AT. it's been making a sort of jerking when I let off the gas and then give it a little more, or when I'm trying to maintain a constant speed at very light throttle. When I'm trying to maintain a constant speed, usually at very light throttle, the car will lurch very noticeably, as if it were an automatic that was awkwardly shifting. It's a big problem on the highway. Other than this, the car is problem free- smooth running engine, perfectly shifting transmission, synchs work alright, and axles seem to be in good shape.

Engine RPMs don't change at all, so I really don't think the clutch is misadjusted or anything is slipping. It feels as if I'm coasting in neutral and then suddenly dropping the clutch, except that the clutch is clearly out the entire time.

Oriel told me to change ATF/Gear box fluid and we did, went back since the problem was still there after two weeks they told me we wash/clean throttle body, system. We did and the problem still there.

The service on schedule so is fuel filter and air cleaner

Before I head to Subaru Kenya, is there anyone who knows what the problem could be and/or a good mechanic for Subaru who can help.
Front bushes have been replaced, alignment and balancing done, shocks Monroe and King coils installed.

Could the problem be at one of the joints in the driveshaft? Or is it (as I have read in most forums) just a fact of life caused by finicky computer engine management that doesn't like that grey area between light throttle and engine braking mostly in AWD subarus?

Have the mechanics checked the power distribution coil and high tension leads leading to the spark plugs?

Start there.....if any of those is faulty, then you get jerking as described by you.

I experienced Jerking on BH5 that I tried to solve for quiet a while including changing the gear box. The mech made me buy solenoids, change the ATF, clean some parts of the AT etc etc. The problem never disappeared. I gave up and got rid of the car. I am not saying should sell yours too Laughing out loudly

@XSK i could sell but i believe its solvable. I love the power in the B4 too much.

Will go to garage on Monday and have the coil & tension leads checked.

make sure the windows are tinted and rolled up before you begin, if it is the car that is jerking have your mechanic check the gearbox mountings loose ones cause the car to jerk when changing gears ie when you let off gas the car changes gears if the mounts are loose it causes a jerk, have them also check the engine mounts too.

Call Njonjo 072-286-0426. He is a Subaru Kenya Mech, can sort you out after work hours without ripping you off.

Call Njonjo 072-286-0426. He is a Subaru Kenya Mech, can sort you out after work hours without ripping you off.

Boss I have gone through this same problem a few years back on a 2004 legacy b5. I took it to many mechanics who advised me oil change, put new sensors, change mountings etc. I loved the drive so I did everything and ended up spending close to 500k. But net result was the problem never went away. Finally someone told me it's a gearbox problem unique to some legacys so I should change whole gearbox. I decided to call it quits and I traded in the car for a forester. Lesson learnt don't be cheated by mechanics, subarus are good cars but very complex and are not easily understood by mechanics here. So don't waste time and money, just change the car.

I have owned several Subaru Legacy B4s in the past and all had similar problems in varying degrees. For one car the problem resolved itself after an ATF flush. It is important to make sure you use manufacturer specified ATF even you have to buy it from the dealer. It is also important to make sure you change the AT filter as when this gets clogged up you will notice jerky transmission changes.

You may have to flash it severally- say monthly basis over 3 months to make sure you get any particles or gunk that may be causing you trouble.

I suspect this should help. If it doesnt you may want to start saving for a new transmission :(

Thanks @matatuman. I am willing to spend (but reasonable amounts)to make the problem disappear so will check Njonjo in course of the week

@guru me & @kayhara as i had indicated above, the system was cleaned before putting ATF in Oct and then did the same last week and the problem gets worse. Oriel are in partnership with Subaru Kenya and i am sure they put the right specification for it.

How much is the transmission? you make is sound very expensive

The engine mounts had been checked but can have them re-checked by this njonjo guy

@pops can i trade with your Forester? (is it the LL Bean?) For sure i will not spend more than 80k on this damn thing. I will tell my governor to give me her vits and she use footsobishi...tuekelee legacy mawe
