Hi @Tycho, can you say something about the fact that binyavanga's life has been reduced to a single story. His sexual orientation. Which is funny because most of us being straight don't care about his bedroom preferences.Or do we ? Not his Caine prize, not his celebrated literary works, not his listing in the time magazine. And one more thing, do it in English please.

The one thing I fail to understand is why gays and lesbians feel the need to announce to us their sexual orientation, I have never seen the heterosexual organize for demos and press statement declaring that they are heterosexual neither have I heard them form or join an association of heterosexual. In my stupid opinion, I think bisexuals, gays and lesbians should follow what the heterosexual are doing if they are looking for equality unless of course somebody is interfering with their life, blocking their rights or discriminating them based on their sexuality. If Obiero did it, Who Am I?

Which is funny because most of us being straight don't care about his bedroom preferences.Or do we ? Not his Caine prize, not his celebrated literary works, not his listing in the time magazine. And one more thing, do it in English please. If you study your question, Binyavanga's experience, my questions and all the reactions of the characters involved, one thing appears; all seem to give the same response but differ in terms of preffered objects. The issue isn't about sexual preference per se. It's about how and why people form identities and how they use these identities to make sense of life. Heterosexuals being the dominant majority will have different objects to reinforce their position like prestige, power, fame because these are areas of the highest marginal difference among them. And in extension, heterosexuals will tend to impose these values and objects on others. Same for gays given a context in which they are not the dominant population or force. Their sexuality becomes an area of high marginal difference and an important part of their interaction with the world. So there are two answers to your question: the first being, gayism has a high marginal difference with respect to contemporary society and thus gets more energy and attention among gays. And the second answer is most people are inclined to have sticky self concepts that disable them from having mutually healthy relationships with others. I really hope my 'English' has been clear and plain enough.

@tycho, . You have actually answered even @swenani's question. Why LGBT guys feel the need to tells us what their orientation is. The "English" was okay, but "highest marginal difference"? Seriously ? Even from Google I came back empty.

You could say the same about any marginalised group - women, disabled, minority tribes etc. In a place where thought is abandoned, freedom can become a curse.

It's interesting that a combination of English words can be 'not English'... but I'm glad that I haven't done so badly.

He could now be the living tangible face of the link between gayism with Hiv. That could be important in eradication efforts (of both even).

I dont know what to say about this guys situation. His life choices have not been in line with the norm and unfortunately they seem to have led him to doom. The last time it was said he had cancer, now we are talking HIV.Sad situation this is. I wonder what his family thinks about his public declarations. Love is beautiful and so are those who share it.With Love, Marriage is an amazing event in ones life time, the foundation of joy, happiness and success.

Thought his HIV status was public info all along ? He had posted about it about six months ago. I find the disclosures on who he sleeps with and his health status boring. His literary works, that ; I find fascinating.
