Did you try buying those items?

These niggas take us for fools......last year when such a thing had been hyped so badly...i was eyeing a 32inch Samsung TV that they had stated that it would be retailing at 9,999.....only for them to say the TVs had run short...almost immediately......

Its just a marketing gimmick to attract attention

I tried buying a cubot phone which was retailing at 50% discount. There seemed to be an internal server error. and when I finally went through, I received an sms informing me that I should be prepared to pay "zero" shillings. So I relax... a few minutes latter, the offer expires.It indicates that the Item was sold to one person. I check out the telephone number of this person.....it was not mine....

jumia ni malenge sana. I wish they had clearly said '10 units available for grabs'. All the black Friday offers were 'sold out in 20-30 seconds'.

The bile on their Facebook page is unbelievable. Seems like they blundered big time. My question is on e-commerce trend in the country.

I have never bought anything from these online merchants. But judging from the comments, it would seem customers have started the exodus from brick and mortar to online.

Could anyone in wazua please share the figures of online sales in kenya. Jumia, rupu, kilimall e.t.c.

I work for Jumia, Black Friday was real, only mistake we made is to under estimate the amount of orders we would get.
The cooker and TV were only 10 pieces each and they DID sell out within seconds.
Haya, nirushieni mawe, I'll take one (or ten) for the team.

I do kidogo online biashara, I have no definite figures on what Jumia, rupu or Kilimall move online but from some sources its promising.

For me I started with books which caught on fine, till the ebooks became more mainstream locally and sales went down, so I stopped that and went into clothes, still newish but not bad so far.

@Vallerrie could give us the status of Jumia as far as activity is concerned

@Nakujua I cant give figures here as I'll be exposing company info. However online shopping is slowly but surely picking up, especially in Nairobi.
Upcountry folks still need a little more convincing.

True, I understand that, @FRM2011 wanted figures but I am sure that would be very hard to come by.

Internet penetration in Kenya is still low, but improving rapidly especially mobile access, I think Jumia and olx are really pushing the online shopping space with lots of energy which is good even for the rest of us, I remember kalahari came for a short while and closed shop.

Did you see Alibaba's figures for singles day ? They made in one day what safaricom would require 10 years to sell.

Soon or later someone is going to figure a way of pushing this thing to the masses, and once we reach the tipping point, it will be harvest time for you guys who are already in.

AC Nielsen estimated that Kenya has done 10 billion shillings in online sales over the last 24 months.
All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

Alibaba is another beast, usd 14b is alot of money - but I really like the Ma's story its an interesting and motivating one.

Crossing my fingers that Helios does a good job at telcom, given their prior experience in data, if they can demystify mobile data, that will go a long way into further opening up the online market.

Lots have happened from the days when only mamamikes was the only online biashara, to now that jumia and olx are placing prime time ads - the rest of us also benefit when more awareness is created.
