hello wazuans,
i am planning to construct a timber house with about 3 courses of mawe. my question is, what can i use to line the walls of the bathroom because water will be splashing on the timber which will make them decay?

Treat the wood first with tar(bitustick/bitumen) or waterproof furnish, then you can use a vinyl wallpaper to protect the wood. The wallpaper is readily available in shops or supermarkets.

Joy bathrooms in inda have these fancy waterproof boards. They look like tiles. People use them especially for rental houses for bathrooms instead of tiles coz they are much cheaper. I think 1,500 for an 8by4.

You can design the shower to be all masonry.

I think you should use vinyl wallpaper on bathroom walls. you can use wallpaper in the bathroom, but it needs to be a specific type.. vinyl covering the paper substrate or fabric is already completely water resistant and is more than enough to keep it waterproof.

Quick solution - use the plastic ceiling for the sides. The ones which come in bundles of 10 going for 5000-5500/=.
There is a guy who has done a nice mabati house using them in the bathroom and kitchen. After doing the plywood, he covered the wet areas with that ceiling. NB: The house is half mawe, half mabati so for the bathroom he did tiles on the stones and floor and that ceiling on top of the plywood.
