Seems the aggressive lending has come back to bite them. At one point last year you couldn't enter a Stanchart branch and not get sold a loan. I entered Koinange st branch at this time last year, despite me never having an account at Stanchart and insisting I don't need a loan, the young lady gave me ideas of what I can do with the money like I can buy a plot or start a business!!!
They broke the cardinal rule of the client is supposed to seek the loan, not the loan seeking you.

@Boris in that thread, I just said that your friend is not bound to take your advise, however sound it is. I did not disagree with your advise to your friend.

I'm surprised that guys are reacting like this to Stanchart. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but these guys are actually reporting their provisions. Mind you if you look at their provisions this year, they are actually provisioning accounts on watchlist from last year financials, this year they aren't giving any loans. They are taking the pain this year for growth next year and beyond, like pruning leaves. In my view this is the time to buy.

Also with their long record of consistency and discipline, I'm more confident about what is in their books than say Equity, KCB, NBK or even Coop.

Again, can someone please correct me if they think my reasoning/logic is wrong.

U are partially right, but the problem here is more in loss of deposits in this tight liquidity race

Don't see the big deal also. Hit is on the loan loss provision and an exceptional item (property sale) last year. still likely to hit EPS of 25 and retain DPS 21.50. Cheap below 250.

Correct. StanChart takes provisions as needed. Some say it takes more than it should in the name of prudence.

Some banks will have to take (increase) huge provisions for NPLs in 4Q whereas StanChart is already taking provisions throughout the year. They also tend to run their losses on Bonds through the P&L and with higher Bond yields come greater losses in the value of the portfolio.

I would not mind buying StanChart at 150 with an eye on the future.

Its unlikely to retain the dividend payout considering the once off sale of property last year. Tomorrow we may see a low of 218.. A definite buy sub 200

Pole sana. Profits for banks will continue, what is happening now is called consolidation where only the large banks will henceforth make real money. Smaller banks will struggle in the next few years since Kenyans have changed tact. Tier II and lower are doomed, since they cant attract account numbers, which implies reduction in every income stream i.e commission, interest income.. Expect layoffs too, to compesate CIR balance
