cars that sell for less than 750k are going to be hit the hardest, going by the current 20% excise duty these class of cars pay excise duty of between 57k - 80k, with the impending law the figure will shoot to 200k large, the cars here are vitz, demio na kadhalika

the next class are those that sell for between 800k - 1.2m these cars pay excise of between 85k - 140k, with the new law this will go up to 200k, cars here include axio, fielder, impreza (1.6) premio, allion etc

cars that sell for between 1.5m - 2.3m currently attract excise of between 150k - 180k, with the new law it will be 200k these ones will not feel the pinch too much, cars here include benz c180, passat, jetta, some foresters etc

cars that sell for more than 2.5m attract excise duty of 190k - >200k the effect here will be marginal increase and savings in cases where excise is >200k, cars include 4x4s benz etc

all the above is based on 7yr old newly imported used cars, the real gainers are going to be the guys who operate the locally used car market with units that sell for less than 700k

The old excise duty of 20% was %age on what figure?
How did arrive at duty of Kes.85K for a car worth say Kes. 800,000?

Its dangerous to have a leader who has never worked;they don't know what the masses are feeling. To them everything is okay and these are just opposition noises.
If u look at the career of Mwai Kibaki from education and career development and compare with the clowns we have you will see why we are suffering

Information is vital, the kind of exposure you have is not the same as most kenyans, especially the poor ones have - and they form the biggest voting block.
They rely on political gatherings to gain information, they depend on the politicians to coming into town to educate them on what is happening in Nairobi.

Now how do you blame those guys who can not even afford to buy batteries for their pocket radios, have no electricity, can't afford a newspaper.

We had the second president of Kenya, who can not be classed as from a privileged background and see where we went with that - you really can't use an individuals background as the yardstick for leadership, also remember with mwai we nearly went to the dogs.

The ones with exposure don't go to vote;they say its a lot of work queuing.
That's where our problems start. We nearly went to the dogs coz of war not the stupidity and madness being witnessed

There is nothing wrong with the new excise duty; Traditionally excise duty is usually imposed on goods with the following characteristics
1.Luxury
2.Limited consumption
3.Hazard products

The purpose of excise duty is usually to
1.Protect the public by limiting consumption through the prices increases
2.Raise revenue from the rich who consume luxury goods
3.Protect the environment.

If you feel the new excise duty rates are unfavorable to you, stop consuming the goods/services, they are not a necessity, you won't die if you stopped buying those goods

No wonder KRA cannot meet their targets on tax collection.
