A quick question to Wazuans... how are your businesses doing so far this year in general...better or worse than last year this time?
Please state the sector... there is a small research Im undertaking on the state of Kenyan economy. and want general views from you to do some verifications on the data collected.. be honest please

Just state - better/ or worse and Sector .

that might be too general - I would think a blanked - "agriculture - worse" would be biased if based on the milk and maize farmers... the tea/coffee and some plant they are growing in meru are all positive.....

Fundaah not sure of the details of your study but I think a good indicator would be to ask people how they are faring...its people that give various companies business (and they too are remunerated by said companies).

Thing is, personally, I see the cost of living has risen (and its very clever of the government to come up with a new basket of goods to gauge inflation and cost of living - very clever - its almost like they want to stave off a revolution by making us think we are better off...when they say inflation is in single digits - BOLLOCKS I say).

Anyway, our electricity costs more, transport (fuel) costs more (even at a time when the global crude prices were around US$ 50, we were still paying around Kshs 81-82). Ugz - Kenyan staple still costs more. A good number of regular groceries have gone up in price.

All this against a backdrop where, in 2008-2009 companies have faced difficult conditions, and in reviewing salaries in 2010, have not given much (or at all).

Anyway, having said that, just a handful of sectors will fare well - banking, petroleum, electricity, telecoms, brewing. The rest will invariably register lower sales....

Djinn ..The data I have somehow supports your sentiments ....Business is somehow slow so far this year compared to last...I find this ironical because I expected things to be looking up given the hope of new constitution and good rains ....I was almost doubting the representativeness of data....

..in the clearing and forwarding industry one respondent says business in down....

while in tourism only about two charter planes are landing at the international airports daily..a number which is too low....

Tourism Sector - This year is better than last year,
Last year,we were badly hit by the global recession, but since most of our overseas clients book almost an year in advance, they opted to cancel their bookings in costly hotels, and take the 3/4 stars, and go by road instead of flying etc to bring down the cost, which might explain the charter planes being out of business. But the industry is better this year for our overseas market,Domestic is however worse than last year

Telecoms..

I keep hear rumours of retrenchments, more retrenchments, synonymous with reduced business.

It appears that not everything is rosy, esp for TKL, Zain and some vendors.
