In fact the section between Nakuru and Malaba/Kisumu will be very expensive, could even hit 3B per km...this is where the line will have cut across the massive Rift Valley.
It was cheaper for the colonial railway to cross the rift valley since the line just meandered and followed the contours of the hills...for high speed SGR the line cannot meander much and it should generally follow a straight line...this will lead to some very long viaducts or long deep tunnels plus dangerous embankments!
Those of you who had the privilege to travel the Naks-Kisumu line will vividly remember the long and highly elevated viaduct between Turi and Elburgon which would swallow a whole 15 coach train...Crossing the Rift Valley sio mchezo.
