@Alph...I am a keen reader and knows exactly what you posted there. I would expect you have a problem with the title of the thread but again...

@Rollins noted. Actually if you noticed, I didn't mention a party, rather I said "govt", although I know the current govt is "TNA" and it's the govt which has been obsessed with closing lately.

Sure man. As you can see the initiator of thread is on a different curve and the real issues of closure will not be discussed. The same University closed their Garrissa campus without much fuss.

How come the likes of Inoorero 'university', Mt. Kenya and KEMU were not closed that swiftly...... given time to correct issues that were identified as wanting.

Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Does Inoorero still exist?
It is a shame the kind of graduates these universities are producing. The issue of quality of our graduates is a major problem and needs to be addressed urgently and soberly.I was speaking with an administrator at THE and he said they have deliberately refused to open universities everywhere to focus on quality.
Sad that most universities are just businesses with the objective of maximizing profits.
The likes of Mama Kamau University needs to be looked into.

Kikuyu universities have been allowed to offer courses like medicine in Kenya yet 4th world countries like Rwanda have clearly noticed they are dubious as the lecturers are people who sell miti no dawa and now purport to teach medicine in universities. The university in question only attracts Kamau lecturers as proper professors like Oduol cannot fathom working in a mountain university teaching future Mugo wa Wairimus and goat eaters

Isn't MKU headed by Professor Stanley Waudo as the VC. Is there a more qualified luo professor than Prof Stanley Waudo, PhD? And didn't Mugo get his nursing degree from the University of Nairobi Medical School, which is rumored to have many luo professors? Ujinga na Ukabila itakuua kijana.

Stanley Waudo is not a Luo.

Beyond the usual political pettiness, which has been generously served to us on this topic by the usual suspects, is a very serious issue.

There were 2 pages in yesterday's Sunday Nation that point to the extent of the problem. No, it;s not just Moi Uni, it's UoN, Presbyterian, CUEA, MMUST, TUK among others that have had to discontinue courses.

The article was a great read. In Moi Uni's case, the Council For Legal Education(Who are they, @maka?) shut down the law school because they don't have sufficient staff(only 2 PHDs for 1600 students), no moot court, small lib that can only fit 8 students among other issues.

Others like Masinde Muliro(or was it Maseno?) had to send their Eng students home early this year after similar issues of accreditation arose. The year is coming to an end and the poor guys are still waiting to hear from the university senate!!

The writers seemed to blame universities for being too much after profit.

I think we are in a serious crisis. Why would even govt institutions be involved in such malaise? These Councils and Professional bodies, where are they when these courses are being initiated and even taught like in Moi Uni case for 20 years? Are the councils and professional bodies just seeking relevance? Would they be enforcing rules such as forcing Engineering lecturers to be members of professional bodies?

Whatever is happening is something that the current administration should look into as a matter of urgency. Money and time are being spent on courses that are rejected too late in the day. People taking up loans to educate their children should do so with the assurance that the courses offered will not have accreditation issues, more so when it's a govt education institution administering a course.

I can't find a links to those articles, whoever does, please post them for us...

The Engineering Board of Kenya is full of USELESS conditions and BS. There are only 1,580 registered engineers in Kenya in all fields (Agric., Civil, Mech and Elec.). EBK wants Engineering courses to be taught by Registered Engineers. Are they for Real????

A Senior Lecturer in Kenya make KShs. 156,000, (yet he/she will be required to have a PhD). A Registered Engineer makes well above KShs. 250,000 (with just a BSc.). Who is going to teach outside Nairobi with those figures?? Outside Nairobi, side hustles are almost NIL!

Egerton University started offering Agricultural Engineering in 1939 but diversified to other engineering disciplines in 1997. For 18 years, that university has been churning out graduate engineers in with the CHE/CUE having no problems. All of a sudden, one arm of the GoK wake up and give orders "CLOSE THAT FACULTY!!!".

Masinde Muliro was a constituent college of Moi University. Before they attained their charter, all was well with EBK (Then called ERB).

Mombasa Poly (University of Mombasa) was offering Engineering courses for JKUAT from 2007-2012, when they were awarded university charter, all hell broke lose.

K-Poly (Technical University of Kenya) was also offering engineering courses for University of Nairobi between 2008-2012, after they were granted university charter, EBK refused to register their graduates.

The presidency needs to address this issue and look at it from all points of view, i.e. the University's, the Professionals', the students, the graduates and the parents!
Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you.” ― Rashi

The current crisis is one of our making, as a society. I do not blame EBK, I do not blame the Universities and certainly I do not blame the students. I BLAME GoK and more specifically ministry of education and the legislature - for lack of proper legal / policy framework.
It is not practically possible to have 50+ universities in Kenya and all offering engineering, law and medicine and then we expect them to produce competent professionals in these fields. The way forward would be for universities to specialise e.g. JKUAT should stick to engineering and science, KU stick to Arts, UON & MOI can be jack of all trade for historical reasons.
If we must have these many universities sprouting in every nook and cranny of this country, let them offer courses in leadership, management and business. Even if universties are supposed to be indipendent, we need a bigger, global framework governing the regulation of university education taking into account the realities of the day. About independence, we had 1 university and 2 constituent colleges in EA. Makerere specialised in Medicine, UON specialised in Engineering and Dar es salaam in law. The system worked.
And for professional bodies, they sometimes tend to be a bit myopic and are not adequately resourced.. They need a bigger framework to regulate their operations. For instance, today we have less than 3000 registered engineers, and half of these were trained in ministry of public works. With introduction of county governments, the ministry of public works seems to be on death bed. Hence, what acted as a training pool for engineers is limping. Who will train engineers going forward? Private sector cannot be expected to do much since it is more inclined to profit making. This is a time bomb which can only be neutralized if GOK looks at the bigger picture and formulates a legal framework to confront these challenges….
