I am hearing on Radio Trottoir eti a Kenyan was busted for EPO. Wahiga Mwaura is on Twitter telling everyone. There was a Kenyan who was inexplicably scrached from her semi final. I wonder if this was why. I hope it is not true. Please don't let it be true. People will start saying eti this is why Kenya is atop the charts.

I hope that it's not true, these other nations and officials could be jealous of Kenya, and sabotage, tarnish the image by e.g. lacing drink with banned substance.

Kenya should think about testing athletes locally before departing, then take own water, food, & chef. Can't be too cautious about these matters.

Thank you Mathenge !!!!!!!!!

Ask most sportsmen who have represented kenya and they will tell you stories about government neglect

Sportsmen are tired of government officials who do literally nothing to promote good sports performance suddenly jump on the bandwagon and take credit when a team does well.

When Stephen Kiprotich won gold for Uganda at the Olympics he said the same thing.

Its funny to see the Kenya sports minister posing for pictures with Malkia strikers after they win yet he probably does not even know how Kenya became good at volleyball. It is the grassroots coaches who volunteer to teach the youth volleyball and who do it with no government assistance. They are the ones who should be posing for pictures and taking credit.

Funny a few years back I saw Hellen Sambili boasting on TV how "under her leadership" , the Kenya sevens team reached the semi-finals of the world cup. She probably does not even know how many players play on a sevens team.

Fact is that most politicians neglect sportsmen, government does not build facilities, does not create policies to support sportsmen then quickly takes credit.

There is so much that the govt could be doing. Start by implementing the sports lottery that was promised as far back as 1998.

The government has promising to put in place that sports lottery system for 15 years now.

It shouldn't be the duty of gov but corporates in conjunction with sporting associations. If the sporting associations do not come up with mechanisms to pump money in sporting activities then let it be. How many times have you seen corporates withdraw their sponsorship due to the eating culture, and when the govt gets involved FIFA suspends the team? The gok should just provide the required infrastructure. Eg stadiums...most of these athletes are employed by GOK as cops etc so as to utilize the infrastructure in place....

1. Government can provide funding by putting in place a lottery system to fund sports. This has been done in other countries succesfully. Kenya government promised it as far back as 1998.

2. Government can offer corporates tax breaks if they sponsor sports

2b. Government should give tax breaks to individuals who sponsor or own clubs like Elly kalekwa of Sofapaka and Bob Munro of Mathare.

3. Government need not intefere with Nyamweya's eating but they can make life difficult for him. Nyamweya gets millions from FIFA which he puts in his pocket. So just bust him for tax evasion. Or put the Kenya anti corruption authority on his case. In Cameroon, the federation chair was thrown in jail for corruption.

4. All the stadia in Kenya were built by colonialists with the exception of Nyayo and Kasarani. In fact most rugby stadia in kenya were also built by the colonialists That means that the colonialists did more to build sporting infrastructure than successive Kenya governments.

4b. Even mitaani sports grounds like jericho grounds were built by the colonialists. Our government does not build fields hapo mitaani. Instead the playing grounds are grabbed by well connected individuals. The famous Muthurwa boxing hall aka Dallas where many Kenyan boxing legends of 70s and 80s were groomed is constantly under pressure of being grabbed.

4c. And the sporting infrastructure built by the government is often crumbling. Nyayo stadium basketball gym is actually leaking so it rains on fans and players.

City stadium surface is so dilapidated yet city of nairobi charge a fortune for its use. Where does all that money go?

5. The colonial government provided free land for sports clubs like Impala RFC, Nondies and Railways sports club, Mombasa sports club and Harlequins.
The current government should also provide land for established but struggling clubs like AFC, Gor Mahia, Mwamba RFC, Kisumu RFC with an MOU signed stating that the land can only be used for sporting activity. This would really help clubs that are struggling financially.

Bottomline: There is plenty the government can do that is done in other countries.

The first 2 can only be done by parliament...the proposal is there on the constitution but how successful has this parliament been in implementing the constitution?

The county govts have done well in rehabilitating stadiums...its not a matter of how many stadiums are there but how well maintained they are...machakos..kisumu...eldoret... and all nrb statiums can all host multiple events

Parliament is not needed. The sports act was passed as far back as 2012 already mandates the creation of a sports lottery yet no such thing has happened.

The sports act itself was mooted in the late 1990s. Finally in 2012, Minister Namwamba pushed it through parliament and it was passed after other sports ministers had done nothing.

Now it has been passed and the sports minister is doing nothing to implement it.

I give credit to Namwamba and Mutua in Machakos for taking initiative. The Kisumu governor is useless in this regard. The stadium was built in large part due to funding from FIFA. The Kisumu governor only reacted to political pressure. And that stadium is still incomplete.

@masukuma can you confirm that smile - kumbe naks ilikuwa tu kelele, and I thought that was the home of rugby. smile

Of course... There were 3 teams outside Nairobi. Nakuru RFC, Kisumu RFC and Mombasa RFC. These teams go back as long time back. Nakuru RFC is a very old club. Kisumu used to play ESS While Mombasa was a good team that produced some national team players like Aswani the flyhalf. That being said the politics of rugby were and still are quins politics. Ngong road has run rugby for years. Even Muthee (a mwamba guy) didn't fit in.

This is what the sports act no25 of 2013 says
Quote:
There is established a Board of trustees of the Fund to be known as the National Sports Fund Board of Trustees, which shall consist of—
(a) a chairperson, who shall be a person knowledgeable in finance, commerce or sports, appointed by the President;

September 10 2014

Quote:
Ministry of Sports Arts and Culture has unveiled a 14-member National Sports Fund board of trustees.

The board will be chaired by Sam Kairu and has members drawn from various sports entities including Agnes Mandu, (ministry of sports), Francis Okwaro (Kenya Golf Union), Fridah Shiroya (NOC-K), Nderitu Gikaria (Sports Council), Catherine Ndereba (NOC-K), Gupreet Singh (Shooting Federation) and Adan Omar (Kenya Volleyball Federation).

Others are Sports PS Richard Ekai, PS Finance Kamau Thugge Attorney General Githu Muigai, Director General Sports Kenya Maina Kamau (acting), CEO Sports Academy Stephen Karinga (acting) and the yet to be recruited secretary of the Sports Disputes Tribunal.

The National Sports Fund is one of the major pillars of sports development established by the Sports Act 2013. Others are Sports Kenya, Sports Academy and the Disputes Tribunal.

While unveiling the board on behalf of Sports minister Hassan Wario, who gave the event a wild berth despite keeping the gathering waiting for more than an hour, Ekai said they are anticipating to inject at least Sh500m into the sports budget annually.

Ekai said the Board of Trustees will be mandated to manage, control and administer the assets of the fund; enter into contracts on behalf of Sport Lottery Fund, raise funds through sports lotteries and investments and disburse the funds and make recommendations relating to financial grants to sports federations.

Now, can we blame the govt? Kenyans as a people should 1. take up sporting as a career. So much talent is lost after high sch.
2. support in terms of purchase of merchandise and tickets.

We cant sit and wait for the govt to take up every responsibility.

That board you mentioned has accomplished exactly nothing since it was established almost a year ago.
The sports act was passed in 2012 and so far nothing useful has been accomplished.

You are wrong when you say sportsmen are waiting for the govt to do everything. In fact they are succeeding with little or no government support.

Thats the point Mathenge is making in his tweet.

If you ask them they will tell you that they have accomplished so much and will even quote the IAAF success as one. Mathenge doesn't even know what he's talking about

Mombasa yes,but Ksm and Nakuru were not in the league in the 1990s.
They were select sides that participated in the festivals.

uko na mchezo... I PLAYED IN KENYA CUP IN THE 90s (late 90s) but still 90s. Labda unaongea huko 92 or something but as far as I can remember (interested in rugby Nakuru has always been in Kenya cup except in 2003 or 2004 when some of us hung our boots... correlation or causality? Think.) But I personally played in Kenya cup in 98 and 99!

Were EABL and Co-op bank right to use Yego's images in their adverts? We all know those corporates don't care about sports and youths in Kenya. They are all more obsessed with bottom lines. Is it not in order for Yego to sue and teach them a lesson.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
