Tax of a car comprises of excise duty 20% import duty 25% and vat 16%. Of the customs value. A 2008/5 allion has an excise duty of 82345. That will rise to 200k and will impact on vat so on average the allion will cost 135k more. A 2008 Toyota Rav4 with an excise duty of 193000 will rise by a meagre 7000 so basicaly its punishing the poor the vitz demio axio allion premio and all cars currently costing below 1.5m will rise by btn 100-150k whereas the Toyota Landcruiser prado the mheshimiwas drive will be untouched

@Premio - The exercise duty for Prados, Mercedes, Range Rovers etc. will actually REDUCE!!!

If a mheshimiwa/cowboy contractor bought a less than 3 year old 5 million car, they would have paid a million bob in exercise duty. Now they will pay 150k!!! The poor will be paying taxes for the rich!!! Even republicans (In the US) would be impressed!!!

My take. The excise duty amount will be the higher of the 200k,or the 20% of customs value, whichever would be higher.

I don't think one importing a Maserati would pay the same excise duty, as someone buying the Indian Nano,if the cars were of the same age.

With the taxman, it's always the higher of the two.

Minimum excise duty payable would 200k but there won't be maximum. The higher the value, the higher the amount.

It's an easy to understand concept. The CS/GoK is encouraging us to buy "newer" vehicles and hence excise duty is fixed at either 150k or 200k. There is no "higher of" whatever else.
See this quote from the link below it. "The used units currently attract
lower taxes compared to new
ones but the Treasury plans to
start imposing higher rates on the
old units to lower carbon
emissions and boost efficiency in
fuel consumption."

@jerry. Your business daily link, what is it talking about? Watch out when quoting some sources.

Really? So if i buy two cars, both two years old, one being Indian Nano valued at let's say 2,000 USD and the other being a Maserati valued at 80,000 USD, i'll pay same amount for both cars?

What would be the reason and benefit to the government for such a move?

My common sense on matters taxation tells me, the higher of the two. There is a budget to meet, why would the gov't give "tax breaks"?

Example, a seven year old Maserati valued at 8,000 USD would be charged the fixed excise duty amount.

But,,,,

A two year old Maserati valued at 80,000 USD would be charged the 20% for excise duty.

I rest my case.

common sense reason is to discourage guy's wa many small cars from causing endless jams to guys of big machines .so either walk or carpool on buses or mats. Why talk of ccarbon emissions and the govt Has worse environmental white elephant monster on the way called " nuclear ambition"

No, after excise has been passed and assented. I don't know when this will be.

A quick question. Where does KRA get the price of new vehicles? Was doing a comparison online and new cars cost less than the price KRA uses or am i wrong?

It was assented to and is effective since yesterday 1st December 2015!

It's a cartel between GoK (read KRA) and the local manufacturers/dealers. In a bid to support the industry KRA requests for the retail price of a new model let's assume a TOyota. This commonly known as CRSP (Common Retail Selling Price). Then this figure is discounted depending on age of the vehicle. So whatever price they quote, no matter how absurd, KRA will use this figure.

The cheaper the car, the higher the impact

If a car is expensive(CRSP of Kshs 6M+),then the duty has dropped.

This is a good way to get rid of these health hazards on the road driven by bankers and accounts assistants as well as reduce traffic jams

it has not. they are going for the higher of the two. so for those the duty is still the same.
