Arsenal STILL won't beat Chelsea to the title - even with Petr Cech - research shows

By Simon Rice

The signing of Petr Cech will see Arsenal improve on the points tally they achieved last season, but it still won't be enough to beat Chelsea to the title, research shows. The Czech Republic goalkeeper is on the verge of a move across London in what many are touting as the potential deal of the summer. Snatching arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League from a title rival will be a huge coup for Arsenal. Chelsea captain John Terry suggested that the presence of Cech in goal could improve a side by 12 to 15 points over the course of the season.

But is Terry right? And should Chelsea fans fear Arsenal stealing their Premier League crown come May next year? The Independent teamed up with the makers of Football Manager to run simulations of the upcoming season to try and find out. The 2015/16 Premier League was played through three times, with the only variable the Arsenal goalkeeper. It found that the presence of Cech between the sticks rather than current options David Ospina or Wojciech Szczesny saw Arsenal perform the best. However, rather than the improvement of 12 to 15 points that Terry suggested, the Gunners finished the campaign on 79 points - four more than last term. According to the simulation, it was enough for Arsenal to rise up a position, but not to the top. Arsene Wenger's side instead ended the campaign in second place, six points behind Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

In comparison, when Ospina was in goal for the entire campaign, Arsenal finished in fourth on 70 points. Szczesny did marginally better, helping Arsenal to third place on 73 points. The research by Sports Interactive, the makers of Football Manager, uses a vast database compiled by approximately 1,000 researchers across the world (including real-life scouts) to blend reality and fiction. It shows Cech out-performing the current Arsenal stoppers in every respect. Across the season, Cech conceded 31 times - five less than the Gunners conceded last season. In comparison, Ospina conceded 48 times and Szczesny 43. When it came to clean sheets, Cech collected eleven over the season, better than the six from Ospina and seven from Szczesny.

The simulation, based on painstaking detail and used by real life managers, suggests Cech will also make less mistakes than his rivals as well. Over the 38 game campaign he made three, causing the loss of one goal. Ospina made four mistakes, leading to two goals. Meanwhile Szczesny made nine defined mistakes across the course of the campaign although it only led to two goals being conceded. Cech is expected to make the move to the Emirates imminently and whilst research suggests his acquisition alone won't deliver a first title since 2004, it does get them much closer.

Almost a done deal unless they find out that his skull never healed.
The only worry is whether he will adapt to Arsenal's defensive high line. He was very well protected at Chelsea.

Arsenal fans still used to having not signed quality players for so long they can't believe a deal even when a guy has done a medical!Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly

Anyway, looks like LvG gave up on pursuing Clyne and liverpool have promptly sucked him up, I guess LvG has decided Varela who was signed up by Moyes is a promising right back, hopefully Rafael remains fit for competition since I have never believed Valencia was meant to be a right back.

So it seems Arsenal have stopped their interest in Schneiderlin and Utd are reported to be favourites for his signature according to Sky reports, but this 25M pounds thing seems to be the benchmark for Utd signings. If it's true that Wenger has turned his sights on Vidal then that will be quite a coup - the guy has shown he has fully overcome that knee injury

Arsenal have so many CMs! Where will Vidal play? Ozil,Oxlade,Ramsey,Rosiscky,Wilshere and now Vidal? There are more priority areas otherwise the team will lack balance. Should now get a quality forward like BVB's Reus and DM cover for Coquelin.

Vidal is box to box player and so he will be competing for a place with Arteta and Coquelin. My thoughts are that ,his arrival will bring out the best of the young Coquelin and so i would welcome that.

Arteta and Coquelin are deep lying midfielders.Arteta has no legs and is being retained for future coaching role.
Cazorla,Ramsey,Wishere and oxlade are all similar to Vidal.
Vidal is 29yrs with no resale value. He has a short fuse and peculiar of the field behavior. A very unlikely Wenger signing. I am almost certain it wont happen.

@Kaka2Za.....You cannot compare Vidal to Ramsey or Carzola, his qualities are totally different from those two. He is a complete central midfielder, very good as a defensive midfielder and also good in providing a link between the midfield and attack.

I didn't like his antics during the champions league final. It's like he was crying to be sent off. Besides, he has a bad haircut and he recently crashed his Ferrari in drunken driving.
I will have to eat a huge humble pie if he becomes a gunner.

I wonder if Ospina will be content to be relegated to the bench. His heorics in the Copa America Quarters are what kept out one of the world's most fearsome strike force of Messi, Aguerro, Tevez, Higuain, Di Maria and La vezzi till they overcame on penalties

Congrats Gunners, you finally bought proven quality, and that too from Chelsea. Must be hard to admit we have better players on the bench than your starting line up.

Hope he helps your recent stats LOOOOOOOOL.

Petr Cech has announced his arrival at Arsenal by making clear that he intends to almost win a number of trophies before ultimately falling just short. Cech, who won a number of important honours at Chelsea, plus four FA Cups, told journalists that his relentless success at Stamford Bridge had left him jaded and he was running out of places to put his medals. "I've won titles almost every year I've been here, and the time is right to say enough is enough," Cech said. "At this stage in my career I need a new challenge that involves coming second, or third, or best of all, fourth.

The Czech Republic international denied that he was betraying a lack of ambition by moving from west to north London, insisting that ambition came in various guises, and that he was mostly looking forward to owning a boat one day. "Winning isn't everything," the 33-year-old told FourFourTwo. "And I'm delighted to have joined a club that agrees." He added that he could probably find space for a Fair Play award, and an Emirates Cup participation certificate, but that he was now intending to use his time at Arsenal to concentrate on whittling, home-brewing his own beer, and learning the saxophone.

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta said: "Petr knows all about winning trophies, and he's told us to forget about that and reflect instead that nothing in life beats drinking a fine bottle of wine with friends while watching the stars. He could be the player to take us to the next level. By which I mean the level of consciousness that medals and cups can bring only fleeting pleasure, and that true fulfilment comes only from within."
