Money market fund, Saccos to mention but a few. Or, or. Hold the cash! cash not losing value is a great advantage in a bear market. and can be considered an "investment" in itslef. Buffet says something close to that

Holding majority of my cash till we reach the bottom of the bear market then buy majority of the stocks....eg safcom down to 15 now, waiting for 14

Many times the eve of election year tends to be bullish,my observation though.

I agree.. A mid-term rebound on most of the big counters is imminent.. Probably before we see a strong bear.

Buffett's take is that CASH allows one to buy when prices are cheap relative to value. He doesn't hold cash for cash's sake but while he waits for prices to drop. Of course, cash has to be placed in an account/instrument that covers the loss by inflation e.g. In Kenya, cash that makes less than 7% (after tax) is losing value.
