He had a "dont care " attitude, his presidency was rife with corruption, tribal appointments, impunity, poor administration and most importantly, he is the most to blame for PEV 2007. Please let us be honest about this. His refusal to act as a statesman was the main reason PEV 2007 happened. Kenyans are always trying to rewrite history.
Those who can't face the truth will bash me for this. But ukweli lazima usemwe so that Kenya can become a better country. We should start writing accurate history so future generations can learn. Today Kenya is repeating the same mistakes from the 1960s because of our penchant for whitewashing the truth. [/quote
Well stated. From the most optimistic country in the world, kibaki truly succeeded in sending Kenya into PEV, 5 years later. No one will ever smash this record. He holds the Gold for that record. Portfolio: Sold You know you've made it when you get a parking space for your yatcht.

Quote:“We encountered reports about Kibaki in the media like everyone else, but we did not consider him for the prize. He was not in the shortlist,” said Salim Ahmed Salim, chair of the selection committee.
Salim added that while Kibaki was eligible to be considered for the award since he left office in the last three years, he did not meet the set requirements to qualify for the award.
He was not even shortlisted, waaahhh!!! Poor man! After 50 years at top of government. If he was not rated/shortlisted. Let's proceed and list , his contemporaries here not listed.... 1) Comrade Bob 2) Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value. –Albert Einstein.

Suppose @Kibaki accepted the defeat met on him by @RAO in 2007, go home to Othaya a happy man having ruled Kenya at least ONE full term; then get this 450 million lump sum and some tens of million yearly for the rest of his life! What a waste. Now he is retired, he daent know how first the 10 years he ruled ended so fast and WORST of all, he had a blood soaked hands to take to his final resting place. Whether RAO won in 2007 is besides the point. He most likely did but thats not even the point. The real issue is that it was not clear who won. At the very least we can all agree that Kibaki did not win the 2007 elections outright because the results are in contention. Even the most ardent pro-Kibaki sycophant will admit this.
Therefore KIbaki should not have declared himself Prezzi in that midnight swearing in ceremony. It is that ceremony that precipitated PEV 2007. It literally looked like he was stealing the election in the dark of the night. You cannot toy with people's emotions like this and expect peace. Especially not in Kenya where people invest all their emotions on the outcome of an election.
So yes the death of thousands of Kenyans is on Kibaki's hands. The people burned in that Kiambu church are in Kibaki's hands and all those who were displaced and lost their property are on Kibaki's hands.
The statesman thing to do would have been for Kibaki to take a step back, allow an independent investigation preferably by foreign observers to determine the fate of the election. And if a re-run was required it should have been done.
I am certain that had he taken these Statesman like steps no one would have died.
Such a statesman action would have saved the lives of the thousands of Kenyans who died, lost their property, jobs etc. Others who had businesses in places as far flung as Busia and malaba saw their businesses burned to the ground.
To this day many Kenyans do not feel safe living in a part of the country that is not their own and Kibaki can blame himself for that.
This is his legacy. A more bitterly divided Kenya. Thousands of deaths, hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Loss of property. etc.
Those are the facts regardless of how you wish to twist them. Again I say, Kenyans should quit trying to whitewash history because we keep repeating the same mistakes.
