I would not be in a hurry to farm in narok. been there, nikachomeka mbaya! two things you eed to do before you farm 1. buy a tractor and a jembe 2. visit narok during the rainy season and harvesting time. you will avoid leasing those farms that flood! witha tractor, you will recoup your money even before planting!
@ Djinn
EABL are thieves! they overprice their fertilizer, seeds and chemicals. and then dictate the price of the the barley. 2 yrs ago, they bought at 1400,1300,1200! for the diff grades. mark you,the highest cost of farming is not in fertilizer, seeds, chemical its in plough,harrowx3 and planting. if you cost(fert 3500+seed2500) vs (plough2500,H1 2000,H2 1500,H31200,planting 1200)!

Many of us who are farmers are feeling it again. We had this drought last year, and now again this year!
Is it true that those already harvesting get average of 6 or 8 bags per acre if they are lucky?
Some places of Narok are so dry that the crops have eventually became pasture for Maasai cattle that surviced the drought.

Farmers who planted this year dealt with raging pests, rust, and now lack of rain.
How are we going to deal with this? Shall we concentrate on the city and forget about farming or go to other regions?
What are farmers going to resort to? Plant other crops which are irrigated hence controlled environment?

Remember wheat being almost needed as input to many products, their prices would increase.

Surely 'the importance of environment'

If you don't want to go to plan B have a good plan A.

What do you guys think of planting wheat for the April rains? (we usually only plant in Sept).

In an El Nino year is there a possibility of a good bumper crop?
