But why should they allow the drugs to expire? Basic stock management practise should have shown them the status of stock level vis a vis consumption and they could have sent them to other hospitals where they are needed.

Eeh, you have a point but this is easier said than done. In the current devolved 'arrangement', every facility buys their own drugs and it becomes very tricky giving out for 'free' that which you bought (unless for 'programs' such as TB/Leprosy, HIV/AIDS, Malaria & Reproductive Health that weren't devolved and whose drugs are nationally supplied at no cost).

A good shopkeeper orders stock knowing very well the demand out there. In this case you'd expect the hospital to have known the kind of patients they treat and by planning they would have minimized the loss. Anyway, my question is how are they planning on disposing them?

I would not be surprised if some of the drugs were supplied already expired!!!

worse still some could for strange diseases never heard of near mt Kenya...
