The script should therefore be pretty simple.....tie the boy to an irresistible long term bumper contract complete with an obscene buy-out clause.

Buy-out clause is a double edged sword because it comes with a hefty end of contract payment.
Keepers earn relatively low wages and very few get GBP100K pw. A good team can thrive with an average keeper. Liverpool won CL with Dudek in goal and Brazil have never had a classy goalie.

Some of us who have seen our team graced by world class keepers like schmeichel and Van Der Sar know that a good keeper is an integral part of a good team. Chelsea fans know all too well how vital Petr Cech has been to their team. One of the reasons Aseno has endured such a major trophy drought has been due to lack of a world class goalie.

A good keeper can win you a cool 15pts in a season which can enable you lift the title easily.

Just to jog your memory Van Der Sar struggled to find a club in England before joining Fulham. Manutd defence was so protective and covered deficiencies of Roy Carrol and Barthez.
Valdez has never been a great keeper either but that never stopped Barca.
Actually, Arsenal have never had a good keeper even in the unbeaten 49.
My point is, defending is a team effort and a good team can win the EPL with average keeper.
Just quote for me the highest amount paid for a keeper!

My point is, you can never win a major trophy with an average keeper. The value of a world class keeper can never be underestimated for a club's success.

Agreed. How many points has De Gea worn Man United this season alone? And we are talking about a League we lost by goal difference to Man City 3 seasons ago and Liverpool lost by 2 points last season.

If you are a serious Title Challenger, and you goal keeper wins you even 4 points only, then you are [most probably] Champions!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

True tManutd lost by goal difference in 2011/12. Who was the Keeper then?
The manchester derby on 23/10/11 was the game changer and De Gea retrieved the ball six times.

Retrieving the ball from the net six times is not memorable.......there is a guy who smokes in dressing room toilets who is known to have done the same two times more.

You are now answering your own question. you finally get it but you still don't know you do.

Let me break it down to you.

1) De Gea was not at the level he is now. He is far much improved.

2) If he was at his current level and made those 6 saves without changing ANYTHING ELSE he did the rest of the season, Man United would have been champions!!!

Do you get it now???

No I dont. De Gea is looking better because Manutd defence is weaker. Keepers who are well protected are less involved and occasionally lose concentration. Mignolet looked much better at Sunderland. De Gea has always been good only that his is on his own now.

See post# 81. You must be a serious title challenger in the first place.

A very good keeper can win you 5 - 10 points (give or take) in a season and then you add to the other points you have. if you are a team of getting 30 points a season, you get 35 - 40 points. Those can't win you the League. But can help in the relegation battle...

Wenger sounded confident discussing departures but he fidgeted when asked about his transfer targets.
I know what he will say in Feb."we could not find the right players. Ozil, Walcott and Ramsey are back in the squad and they are like new signings "

..and I agree with Valdes that De Gea is the best Goalkeeper in the world today.

Not the Keeper alone..Problem with them is that that they are not a balanced team. Too strong in some departments and weaker than Karuturi in others. Kane will walk into Man u, Barca, Real first 11 today, Hugo is in a class of his own..

The perfect scenario is to have a well balanced team.unfortunately only Real and Bayern are close to achieving that.Barca are short in defence and still playing Marcherano at CB.
For me,it is better to have a well drilled defence with an average keeper rather a porous defence with a great keeper.
A great keeper may earn you 15 points but a well drilled defence is worth much more.Cassilas was colorless last season and he almost gifted Athletico the CL but was bailed out by the quality defence.

I rest my case.

I also have a strange feeling that Manutd would be title contenders this season if they had good defenders.
