so GOK is supposed to look after him just because he was a "hero"? my take is this. If you made money and submitted it to tax payers then tax payers are required to take care of you later in your life but if you did not... well... join the disgruntled list of "heroes" who mismanaged their lives and want tax payers to foot their twilight years. He is still young he can bounce back.

Let the guy wipe his makamasi and start working like other Kenyans do........ he is still in denial. I can fundraise for his rehab but not lifestyle!

You f*** your life and want the government to step in and help you! Get serious. We all have a responsibility to plan for our future unless we are intending to die tomorrow. I look at some musicians who were the talk of the country in the 80s and 90s and I just pity them. They sleep in the streets. They were paid royalties for their records and earned much from their performances. But they blew all the money on beer and pussy! Well...He still has an accent. He can train people how to speak in that accent. There are many wannabes who would pay to acquire it...

He is not alone...

Govt hasn't failed, but managers and agents have. Our athletes get serious cash in a very short time, have basic education and are mesmerized by big money.
The so called managers dont act in the interests of the athletes.
So many athletes have fallen by the wayside, where is Henry Rono or Paul Ereng? Compare them with those who were managed well - Catherine 'the great' Ndereba or Daniel Wakihuri....
On to Maurice, he's a personal friend, so is his brother Tito. Contrast the two characters and it will be clear who got hit by the stuff from the fan.
And another thing, know when to leave the stage, the audience wouldn't clap forever. Like @essky said, come back to earth after you leave the stage.

If you get a chance to go to India ask the local folks where Kenya is and you'll get blank stares like you are from Mars. Now, for the few who know, ask them who is the current president, again same stares. Proceed and ask if they know Morris Odumbe and you'll get a wide smile with a comment 'Odumbe good spinner' then tell them you are the brother.Guys will line up to take selfies with you.

Apparently,Indians have never forgotten what Odumbe did to them in the cricket world cup back then.

Sad it has come to this. Saw him in a TV ad sometime back,he seemed to be doing okay, didn't know it would end up like this.

Very true!!
This guy was fixed by the same guys who fixed then Kenya Cricket Council chairman Sharad Ghai. He was caught up in local and international intrigues and ended up a victim. There was a war for control of Kenyan cricket between the Hindus, the Ismailis, the Bohras and the Jains. Even though majority of the star cricket players then were black Kenyans, the management of Cricket then and up to now was a preserve of the Asians, but the Asian were not united and were divided into their own social and religious groupings

Unlike other careers, sportsmen normally have a relatively short time to shine and make money and mostly that's when they are at the peak of their careers (20-35). And that should be the time to invest and plan for retirement at 35.

If the guy had invested eg in some property when the millions were rolling in, then he would be very comfortable now despite what happened to his career. But from the interview it's like he lived the high life and made no investments. This should be a lesson to other sportsmen eg athletes, footballers, boxers etc. As they say, Make hay while the sun shines.

Odumbe have done more for this country than all of you on this forum

Sure he messed up. Who doesn't? I have.

But its true that when Kenyans treat him like trash, that ain't fair at all.

This is one of the reasons why I decided I will never do anything for Kenyans or Kenya. These people ain't royo.

A friend who was a keen follower of cricket those days writes:

Quote:
Odumbe was allied to the Ismailis, being a player for Aga Khan. The Ismailis controlled Aga Khan, and many of the top positions in the then Kenya Cricket Council whose chairman was Sharad Ghai. But Ghai was very corrupt and hated by many of the other groups who wanted him out by all means. Unfortunately, it was impossible to justify removing him because Kenya was then performing extremely well in world cricket thanks to solid performances by Odumbe, Asif Karim, Steve Tikolo, Ravindu Shah, Thomas Odoyo, the Suji brothers and the Obuya brothers. The best players were obviously Odumbe and Tikolo though Odumbe was more charismatic, photogenic, media friendly etc.

Kenya was doing so well that it was miles ahead of Bangladesh the only other One-Day nation that did not have Test status. Bangladesh was on the verge of getting granted test status, but they could not justify granting Bangladesh test status before Kenya.

Then it was action time.
The readiness of Kenya and Bangladesh were to be assessed at around the same time. An Indian inspector came to Nairobi to assess Kenya, and concluded that Kenya was fit to join the elite test nations. Everybody was excited for a week. But the following week, as British guy came in and rubbished Kenya saying we were decades away from Test readiness. Interestingly, even local journalists were more willing to side with the British guy than the Indian guy.

Kenya's biggest supporters in its quest for Test status had all along been India and the West Indies, and most of the real tours Kenya made were to India and one to the West Indies. South Africa, under Ali Bacher had also been friendly to Kenya, but white-dominated Zimbabwe remained aloof.

The World Cup was just weeks away and everyone predicted that Kenya was going to be thrashed like step children. Long story short, Kenya ended up fourth in that World Cup and people started asking questions on why Kenya wasn't a Test nation yet. Now we were starting to ruffle big feathers.
The war to dismantle Kenyan cricket was launched at high levels of the ICC. First to go was Kenya's best cricketer, Maurice Odumbe. Second to go was KCA chairman Sharad Ghai. Ghai's local enemies were used to try and remove him. But unfortunately, Ghai had total control of the KCA, the way Nyamweya has control of FKF now, it was impossible to remove him. Mega corruption charges were leveled against him and the Sports Minister, Ochillo Ayacko was convinced to allow a new body called Cricket Kenya and led by Ghai's enemy Samir Inamdar to take over cricket affairs in Kenya. Odumbe was easy to deal with.

Once Inamdar took over, Kenya cricket took a nosedive. Even tours to India are nowadays impossible to make. Meanwhile Bangladesh is now a Test nation while Kenya was stripped of even the One Day International status that we had. Nowadays we have to compete with the likes of Netherlands, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, UAE, Nepal etc in some nondescript cups.

Quote:
And wonder of wonders. The five year ban, even though recommended by the ICC, still had to be approved by the Kenya Cricket Association, before it became effective. The Kenyan association could simply have handed him a fifty thousand shilling fine and allowed him to play on, just like the Australian board did for Shane Warne who had been handed a lengthy ban by the ICC for receiving money from a bookmaker, which the Australian board reduced to a few thousand dollars.. Easy Peasy. But the Kenya Association just sat there like donkeys and allowed the ban to stay. The ICC cannot ban a player if his association does not approve the ban. So the guy is right in saying he was screwed by the Kenya association too. Useless pigs.

Secondly, an appeal of the ban even at the High Court in Nairobi would have allowed him to continue playing for years as the matter is heard in our slow courts. Useless Lawyer Kapila did not even advise Odumbe that an appeal was possible. Dude got screwed good

Are you 100% sure he didn't pocket cash from bookmakers to fix matches? Fact is he was investigated by the International Cricket Council and found guilty.

I'm trying not to comment on this as its too close to home. However, the snide remarks about his life made here can't go unchallenged.

I can authoratitively tell you that Maurice was worked on proper. For some reason, the cricket fratenity hated the guy. Even his own team mates disliked him. I call it envy. Because he was by far the best cricketer south of the sahara.

when you say that he was living the large life, do you know what you are saying? what did you want him to do, live in Kibera? the guy had more sponsors than you can count. And he was damn good.

I'm actually shocked to see him like this. Extremely shocked.

But more shocked by people who think that they are so clever in investing this can't happen to them.

Maurices problems have everything to do with corruption in Kenya.

Bank that one.

Fact is Odumbe messed up his life and disgraced the Cricket world and also Kenya. The following charges, among others, were confirmed:

- Admitting that he had received the sum of US$5000 to fix a match;

- Receiving the sum of US$10,000 in cash from a known bookmaker in June 2002;

- Receiving the sum of US$8000 in cash from a known bookmaker on an unidentified date in 2002-03; and

- Admitting to receiving US$5000 for fixing a match in Zimbabwe.
