River Omo supplies L.Turkana with 80% of it's water. This has been reduced by the construction upstream of the second largest Hydro-electric dam by Ethiopia Electric Power Company (EEPCO).The project (Gilgel Gibe 3),was started in 2006 and has since contributed to lowering water levels in the lake by a whooping 8 metres. What is worrying is that much of the water from Omo is fresh and therefore alkalinity in the lake will increase thereby affecting aquatic life.......Drying of the lake may commence as soon as the river is cut off to fill the dam with 11 Billion cubic metres of water later in the year........................and if we try to utilise Nyando,Mara,Nzoia,Yala or Sondu Miriu water?.....Heck...The Egyptians will go to war.....They dictate what we do with our resources ......This is a pathetic government..

If you have money that you expect to start using in five years,it now belongs in stocks.
When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.

Forgive my laymans view, but I think the situation is a little different. Our using the waters of Victoria would DENY Egypt water. The Ethiopians will not deny Turkana water, they will dam it,and after the reservoir is full, the lake will get its water. I am not addressing the merits or otherwise of Kenya not being allowed to use the Victoria waters, that's for another day,but you can guess what my feelings are.

either way the egyptians will lack water whether we dam it or not. the main source of the victoria is from the mau forest and cherengany hills and with the kind of destruction going on there, its a miracle if victoria survives. its quite horifying to see vagabonds carriyng modified torches with the aim of burning the mau. i think the squatters wheter genuine or not should be kicked out immediately. they did it on mt kenya, why not there?
hey
