I think we just need more armed policemen around. But as we know, we dont have enough policemen around.

Say 'Naomba usilipue mall yetu tafadhali' With a smile

But on a more serious note, guards do help. The guards at the '98 US Embassy bomb blast saved many more lives. Had that explosive-laden truck made its may into the basement, there is no telling how many more would have perished. Some of the guards, survived too.

we expect too much and invest too little, honestly anybody who expects an un-armed guard with no police training to handle terrorists is kidding themselves.
the guards are hapo to make sure there is order and to keep out the street kids.

for terrorists, the idea is to prevent them from getting to such establishments, lakini when the suicidal folks get to the gate - there is nothing much one can do.

There is some sense in that. During the Westgate Sieke, the terrorists didnt even give the guards an option to search them, they just shot them down.

That's true, I think the people who run these malls should seriously consider hiring armed cops instead of those clueless guards who are just as vulnerable as the kawaida Kenyan or at least make sure there's one or two cops to back up those guards. If one Bank can manage to hire more than 50 armed Cops almost every day for their cash-in-transit why can we get a few at the malls....

Are you serious? This is 2014. While you were away... we came up with something called technology. We also taught dogs to more than bark and bite!!!

If you can build a mall, you can afford to install a scanner. It can even be fixed and you reduce the number of people doing physical searches. You can probably increase the number of armed personnel that can respond when a security breach is detected.

And if your mall is known to have state of the art security - you can shout about it without giving very specific details - you get more customers, higher sales, higher rents etc.

Robots that can see through walls is part of technology. It's estimated that by around 2040 most armed guards will be robots. Even sniffer dogs will be robotic. The malls will be intelligent.

But even then criminals will still be there.

True.

How about we have a special category of private security personnel who are allowed to carry weapons including assault rifles. We can have very strict requirements for joining this 'force'. For starters, you must be ex-military, ex - police etc. with a clean record among other requirements. They can be run privately but the government vets, licenses both the organizations and individuals, provides oversight etc. We can have all the legislation put in place. Private organizations and individuals can then hire the services of these individuals/firms.

We will improve security, provide jobs to ex - military/ex - police/ex - GSU, transfer some of the security costs to willing firms/individuals etc.

It is the government's responsibility to provide security but we will never have a police officer for every individual. With this kind of arrangement, we can actually provide you with an armed security person or more if you so wish and are willing to pay and at the same time we don't reduce the policemen in "general circulation". We also reduce the number of ex - policemen who turn to crime because there are jobs waiting for them.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.
