JOINT PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE KENYAN SECURITY LAWS (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2014

NAIROBI, KENYA, DECEMBER 17, 2014 – Below is a joint Public Statement by the listed Heads of Mission.

Over the past two years, Kenya has faced extraordinary security challenges. As international partners and long-time friends, we stand with Kenya in the fight to defeat al-Shabaab and terrorism.

In light of al-Shabaab’s attacks and ongoing threats, we welcome the effort by the Government of Kenya to revise and update the country’s security legislation. We encourage Kenya's elected officials to take the time to review carefully the bill now before the National Assembly and to consult broadly to build consensus. It is important that the legislation, while strengthening security, respects human rights and international obligations. Protecting Kenya’s Constitution and upholding civil liberties and democracy are among the most effective ways to bolster security.

We also urge Kenya to continue implementing broader reforms to strengthen its security services, including their ability to collaborate across agency lines and carry out operations with full respect for human rights and the rule of law. Building trust between communities and the security services is also critical.

As Kenya’s international partners, we underscore again our commitment to work with the Government and people of Kenya to meet this country’s challenges, including those related to security. We are committed to our friendship and to assisting Kenya as it works to build a more secure and prosperous nation.

Signed:
Ambassador of the United States to Kenya Robert F. Godec
High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Kenya Dr. Christian Turner
High Commissioner of Australia to Kenya Geoff Tooth
Ambassador of the Netherlands to Kenya Joost Reintjes
Ambassador of Germany to Kenya Andreas Peschke
Ambassador of Denmark to Kenya Geert Andersen
Ambassador of France to Kenya Rémi Maréchaux
Ambassador of Sweden to Kenya Johan Borgstam
High Commissioner of Canada to Kenya David Angell

TAZ is so busy jubileeing he's forgeting that there are some of us who don't care about politicians.

TAZ the art of propaganda is an elusive art in these days of the internet. It seems you are not learning.

Right now the narrative is that Cord MP's are causing chaos in parliament.

True, but you forget the other story.

Jubilee MP's are also busy looking for Cord Mp's to hammer. Ask Muthama.

Let's be serious for a bit shall we. And a bit of objectivity is required.

It's like you are handing ODM a campaign tool for the next 3 yrs. One that carries a lot of weight for those who lived during Moi's time.

Thought for a moment MCAs have invaded NA. Its a healthy thing to debate/talk/exchange but all is lost in a shouting match.

But jubilee is practising tyranny, and they are the bad guys any way.

Let this bill pass. Why

It shall soon fall into the hands of Machozi.. He shall use it properly!

It can only work in certain counties and Nairobi. I don't see how any suspect outside Nairobi and 'these counties' can be kept in a 'local' cell for even 2 hours. Say two youths in Mombasa arrested and detained under this new laws. that will be the last time Mombasa shall have Police Stations.

When the cops are tired of milking the Somalis, they shall come for any Kenyan..

I ask CORD to stop turning this thing into a cheap political matter and let the bill pass.
Then we shall see whom it shall affect more...

@Swenani let me show you gory

In the meantime, the saints from Jubilee will tell us how "civilised" their MPigs are. Apana....Those types of topics you take to your facebook groupies.

A Kenyan MP is someone to fear and they all have an agenda.

What we are asking for is a sober responsible MPig. That is not coming from either side.

Luckily for me, as they scratch each other in Parliament I can continue tweering. Until 2.30 pm without fear of being arrested.

Here is what Jubilee MPigs are doing in Parliament today. Very peacefully and professionally
