You have hit the nail on the head. Personal cars are the problem in Nairobi and not matatus. Most private cars on the road normally have just one person while matatus carry 14 people, and both vehicles occupy the same road space. Thus a 14 seater is 14 times more efficient for city transport than a personal car. A 33 seater is 33 times more efficient etc etc. It is personal cars that should be banned from nbi, not mats. And with thousands of personal cars being imported and added to the roads each month the situation will only get worse as we blame the wrong culprit (mats). Govt should introduce a toll/congestion charge of eg 500 bob for any personal car entering cbd.

We should borrow from London

Who does ? I thought the other day someone said there is jam even on sundays ati its guys from upside picking and dropping their mpangos to and from Eastlands .

@Swenani smile but it's true traffic is so eased up over the weekend...A friend of mine who works at Thika and lives at Kasarani has been attending some training at college of Insurance, the dude wonders how we survive....takes him a whole hour plus from bellevue to nyayo....then the stretch from the nyayo roundabout to the GPO another hour...He takes less than 35 minutes from Kasa to Thika when going to work...
If we are to ban private transport lets have well driven, efficient, well priced PSVs...
Have the new trains started working?

Why does every nairobian want to 'drag' 1 ton of steel (his car) through the city roads every day of the week? Why not leave the 'burden" at home and hop into a mat?

Private cars increased because of frustration of a chaotic messy public transport system , personally i was happy to use public transport till they started changing routes when it suited them, playing filthy music when i once complained , i was told to get my own , that is what i did .

some are too young to remember that we had regular timely bus service in NBI

Anyway the more things change, the more they remain the same. That is Kenya for you!

Because Mats are not reliable or consistent in terms of fares, routes used, departure times etc…

Are you saying that someone who needs to offer public transport between Homa Bay - Rodi Kopany - Rongo needs to buy a 33 or 62 seater bus from GM? Or shamakhokho-chavakali-kakamega? A 14 seater is best option. Also how many people will afford ksh 4-8m to buy the new buses?

You can see who the problem is in nrb. Yes, the thousands of personal cars that hinder the smooth movement of 14, 33 and 62 seater mats/buses, bringing the city to a stand still. The private owners should be "forced" to use mats via heavy toll charges and astronomical parking charges to decongest the city.

Now most of those cars will be carrying 1 or two people. Suppose they all used a mat, that will be about 14 cars off the road, and another 14, and another 14.....
