Much has been discussed about (de)merits of giving a car to car-hire/cabs firms. But what about starting your own. What r the requirements (licences, insurances, safety/security, etc)of this biz? How can one easily market the biz? Am toeing with the idea coz in dec i hired my private car to friends & people I knew and it wasn't that bad. Those of you with experience pls share.

I don't know much about it but I have a friend doing it and from what I gather it is a good business. Just find out the requirements and go straight ahead. I can just advise you to avoid too much credit since this might bring a lot of shidaz. Some months will be tougher than others for example Dec is a boom but Jan and Feb come real slow. Try to have as many cars as possible to increase income base and make sure you pay the owners on time....All the best in that.

Car hire looks good, but there is a security matter that you should get acquainted to before you decide. these days con-men borrow car-hire vehicles and sell them to unaware kenyans then call you to inform you that the car has been sold to fulani wa fulani then your car can get detained as they look for the middle man.
Tips to avoid this scenario is to ensure that you take a recent photo (there and then) of the self-drive customer in addition to photo-copies of his ID and Driving licence. Good luck

Car hire biz is not bad as long as ur lucky n have done ur homework well. The entry rules depend on the area ur just about to operate from. eg if ur targeting the westlands area there r already established/existing guys in that area n the entry "fee" will be required as usual before they allow u to compete with them but u must be introduced by an existing player.

as someone put it its very dangerous to hire for self drive as some hirers are upto no good. One of my buddies car had parts cannibalised before being returned. It dawned on him much later that he was even lucky not to have lost the car in the first place. As masukuma said u need to come up with precautionery measures to safeguard ur asset.

Another scenario is to hire ur car to cab companies but again u need to do some due diligence to ensure that the company u deal with is reputable in the right sense. But do avoid those companies that promise you a fixed monthly payment.Good luck

A few tips from one who is doing the business.
1. Get a good car track, I use stoic.
2. Have good clean well maintained cars, preferably your own. If you are going to take other cars, sign a contract with the owner.
3. Vet the people who you give the car to. Just like the CRB that financial institutions are going to be using, make sure that the person is referred to you by someone you know and who has done business with the client.
I am very strict on this, because last year I had a car hired and sold. I recovered it but what it cost in terms of time, was much more than what he had paid, yes he paid!!!

So this is a good business and just like any other, there are risks. Be careful.
